K5054 Spitfire question

Greetings,

I have a friend who is doing a 1/48th scale replica of K5054 based on a Spit 1A(2-bladed). There are about 10 differences apparently.
Can anyone here supply a link or pics of close-ups of the exhaust, undercart doors, tailfin, canopy, skid and any other relevant pics please?

Many thanks
Chris

Hiya,

Just a quick note to say a BIG thanks on behalf of my friend who’s building the model of K5054.

Very much appreciated. There are some extremely helpful people on this website.

Cheers
Chris

Got the images finally.

These are all from Spitfire Story by Alfred Price. Hopefully they look OK on-screen, as I had to reduce them a bit.

First view – GA of K5054 as she was on 5 March 1936.

Second view – comparison between Spitfire MkI and K5054

Third view – GA of K5054 as she was around May 1936 (IIRC)

(Hmm – just realised that they don’t! Turbo, e-mail me if you want better versions and I’ll be happy to forward them.)

Hi Daz,

I’ve dropped you an email.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks so much Papa Lima and Daz.
I will be sure to forward these to my mate.
I will also make sure I get a pic of the finished article to post here, as he is a very good modeller.

And Philo,…..well…it was a great game of rugby (for us anyway). Maybe if you had your mate Johnny in there kicking, it wouldnt have been too bad. 😀

Another lot of images from the same site.

I’ll have another image or two tomorrow, with any luck.

Just tried to enlarge one of those Italian “modellismo” thumbnails in Photoshop – no good at all! They’ve been reduced down to almost nothing!

Have just found this link with a plethora of K5054 pics – pity it’s not in English, but it might save a lot of scanning!

They’re gonna be a bit slow in coming – have to take one or two images to work to edit properly, but here are a couple of starters.

K5054 tailskid detail.

Dunno what the hell rugby has to do with Spitfires, but never mind.

I found a diagram of some of K5054’s details in one of the books. Will try to scan it just now. The other books still beckon…!

Hello Turbo_NZ, on a sporting front (and as you are the first Kiwi I have come across today)I have heard it suggested that England -NZ should call it a draw ,you beat us at rugby and we beat you at cricket. I say no, you only beat us once at rugby (recently) and we have just beaten you in all three tests so I make that 3-1 to England. Mind you its a good job you guys don’t play international soccer or else that might even the score.
I reckon the English cricket team are almost ready to thrash your neighbours.

I’ll also see if I can get any pics from Clive Du Cros’ book on the building of his prototype replica – it was externally faithful (pretty much) and so has the original fin/rudder shape.

Spitfire prototype details

Here (if they work!) are some scanned details from photos on page 167 of “Spitfire – A Complete Fighting History” by Alfred Price.
The first, without exhaust stubs, is from May 1936, at Eastleigh shortly after being painted light blue.
The last exhaust scheme is ejector exhausts when the aircraft was camouflaged, some time after September 1937.
I hope they help a little!

That would be great, thanks Daz.

There’s not really a lot of close-up pics in googling searching.

BTW How is your replica homebuilt Spit coming along ?

I’ll look out the books tonight and see how I get on. There are two or three that I can think of that are worth looking into. Most Spitfire books just have maybe half a chapter on K5054, and little else, unless you have anything by Alfred Price, or Spitfire – The History.

My little Spit is still in the planning stages at the mo – I’m debating whether to buy a part-built project, or start from scratch. Looking at it, the part-built job will shave years off the building time – especially as I wanted to get the thing done in five years!

Unless Mark12 or anyone else gets in first, I could have a crack with the scanner tonight with some pics from varous Spitfire books.

Either that, or simply type “K5054” into your favourite search engine, and you should come up with a few things.
