There is a good book published around 1970 by Bernard Millot titled “Divine Thunder, The Life & Death of the Kamikazes”

Many years ago I read a book by a Kamikaze pilot cant for the life of me remember what it was called, but I seem to remeber quite a few survived the war!

Presumably if they had a problem between take off and their target they would be expected to return, and if the problem was terminal to their aircraft I guess they’d jump rather than dive happily into the ground…?

I do seem to remember there was one pilot who went twice and still survived the war. Or maybe elements of that refer to a single pilot…
