Hello Everybody,
Yesterday several Portuguese media announced that Portugal is interested in the purchase of 2 Dutch Karel Doorman frigates.
This 2 ships would finally replace the last 2 “João Belo” frigates from the 1960s still in service of the Portuguese Navy.
According the news, Portuguese Navy personnel was in the Netherlands to check on the operational status of 2 KD (no reference to any specific ship was made).
Since it seems that the Dutch Navy is intending to sell the last 4 KD still in Dutch Service, I would like to ask for any feedback regarding this issue, specially from Dutch Colleagues.
Thanks in Advance.

MAST Europe 2016: Portugal updates frigate modernisation roadmap
Alex Pape, Amsterdam – IHS Jane’s Navy International
22 June 2016
The Portuguese Navy is to follow the path set by the Royal Dutch and Belgian navies to modernise its pair of M-class frigates, locally referred to as the Bartolomeu Dias class. Speaking at the MAST maritime defence exhibition in Amsterdam, Rear Admiral Jose Belo Garcia, head of Ships Directorate for the Portuguese Navy, noted that the navy had decided to upgrade the two ex-Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) frigates.
The Portuguese Navy acquired the ex-RNLN ships, decommissioned early under defence cuts, under a 2006 contract. The first vessel, Bartolomeu Dias (ex- Van Nes , decommissioned from the RNLN in December 2007) was handed over in January 2009.

from the great masters of ship-drawing :)

(just a remark, the pennant should be moved a little to the back, more or less aligned with the 76mm gun) 😉

no, no , no!!!
Maybe i did not explain myself….the gun mounted on board will be replaced by an IDENTICAL Oto-Melara 76 mm
(that is being maintained now)The one on board is still the original from the Van Nes that will afterwards go for maintenance
We will keep the 76 mm , no plans for creuseot-loire
😉
Thank goodness (thought these would look nice sproting a US 5″ and 2 rather than 1 goalkeeper, with one directly in front of the bridge)

Oooh, are they going to stuff a French 100mm gun in there? That’ll be different, it will look funky on these ships. But, if they replace the main gun – presumably for logistical reasons – why keep the goalkeeper?

(for example the 76mm gun is not the definitive, will be replaced still, so it was not even painted in “PN grey”, it is still on Dutch Navy grey)

Two remarks:
1- No flight deck modification like the M’s going to Belgium (for larger NH90)
2- Apparently no radars on the Goalkeeper and main mast > not ready to go to Portugal (?) or getting something different?
Hi Wanshan
Long time no “see” 😉
about your points:
1- You are right, both portuguese Ms will not have the modified flight deck because we will keep using the LYNX (no NH-90 for PN ) 🙁
2 – The parts you mention are under maintenance, same procedure as used on the Belgian F-930 when she left drydock (see pic posted several posts before)
As far as I know it’s the usual procedure before hand-over to foreign navies, now the equipment will be re-mounted as it gets fully revised 😉
(for example the 76mm gun is not the definitive, will be replaced still, so it was not even painted in “PN grey”, it is still on Dutch Navy grey)
The official handover cerimony is scheduled for 21th November
Cheers!

Just a short update
the Van Nes will be renamed NRP Bartolomeu Dias (F-333)
the Van Galen will be renamed NRP D. Francisco de Almeida (F-334)
The Bartolomeu Dias will be transferred officially in late November but will remian in Dutch waters until March/April 2009, due to the shortage of training plantforms within the Dutch navy and will serve as basis for trainment of the crew of the 2nd ship.

the Van Nes will be re-christned NRP BARTOLOMEU DIAS
after the Portuguese discoverer of the Cape of Good Hope

Hr.Ms. Van Nes terug
14-12-2007
Hr. Ms. Van NesHr.Ms.
Hr.Ms. Van Nes wordt afgelost door Hr.Ms. Van Galen.

Wanshan,
Could you supply more information on those maneuvers?
What ships take part on it (heard that Walrus arrived to Willemstead last week too)
When did started and when finished
Where to get more info on it?Many thanks…
It’s not an exercise but an ongoing op. Nessie was part of it earlier as well be had to leave it late August to partake in the PANAMAX 2007 exercise in september. However, prior to the exercise came to a conslusion on september 7, Nessie left to provide aid after hurrican Felix hit the middle American mainland (Nicaragua). She was joined by HrMr Pelikaan. By mid september she was back at Curacao, then Bonaire, to patrol with the ABC islands coast guard. Then in the last week on to the exercise VENHOL / Open Eyes, with the Venezuelan navy (VENezuela – HOLland). VENHOL involved both navies (frigates Mariscal Sucre and Van Nes), Open Eyes the coast guards of Venezuela (bark Oreama) and the Antilles (cutters Panter and Jaguar) . Then early oktober back to op Carib Venture.
