KC-45: Lockheed, are you listening?

Is the KC-45 a shot across the bow for the future airlift needs of the USAF? Lockheed delivered the C-130J late and the airplane still has inherent problems that critics continue to lament. Has the Pentagon signalled that the A400 might be a future possibility (if and when it gets up and running)?

The USAF needs more airlift and the A400 would seem to have some advantages over competitors:
Compared to the C-17 it is more efficient due to the turboprop power. With fuel prices going through the roof this is very important. Further, the C-17 is optimised for short, unprepared field, performance.

Compared to the C-130J the A400 is larger, and the USAF has a glaring need for lift and volume.

WRT to both, it is another competitor. Thats good for the taxpayers and good for the users.

If I were running Airbus, the KC-45 decision would cause me to pour resources into the A400 NOW, in order to get the thing flying ASAP. PS I am aware that engine development problems are beyond their control.
