hey all!
having now acquired a tripod for my camera from a DC camera store, i decided to test it out with some night shots at DCA! Gravelly point is still filled with people even late at night, which i was surpirsed by…the nights are warm here so i guess its quite a hotspot.
the usual DCA traffic was arriving on rwy 19, so most of these are approach shots! you can also get a view of the major DC landmarks from the riverbank, so there are a few of those in there too. i was about to leave when i saw the moon poke up over the horizon…it was HUGE:O and bright red, so i thought it was an opportunity too good to miss! comments greatly welcomed, thanks for looking guys!

I really like these night shots, Sam. I’ll have to try some myself – I’ve had a tripod for over 8 months now 😮 , but combination of poor weather / lack of transport to/from Gatwick in the evenings has prevented me from trying any.

This is my third attempt at replying to this thread – I don’t quite know how to write my praise of your photos, Sam. Absolutely fantastic. Expect an email soon. 🙂 Some of them, are very very beautiful indeed. 🙂

hey alex,
thanks for the comments! i believe the shutter speed was 30 seconds, at F14. i also tried shorter periods at F6.3 (lowest at my max. zoom), results werent vastly different.

Great shots Sam! Long exposure night shots look really artistic. Especially like the ramp shot. Just wondering how slow the shutter speed was?

Superb selection, Sam! Night shots are something I’ve yet to try. Damn these long Summer days!

Sam love the shot of the apron and tower; I was at DCA last Thursday on my way back from Norfolk Naval Air Station in VA, had a great (very hot) day in the park snapping the landing aircraft. If you walk away from the runway and under the railway and highway bridges you can get some great shots of the aircraft in the final turn to the runway. Did you manage to get some day shots?
All the best
Si
