S. Korea to Begin Constructing Aegis Destroyer Next Month
SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s Navy said Wednesday that it will begin constructing its first 7,000-ton-class Aegis-equipped destroyer as part of a three-phased naval force improvement program.
The vessel will be the first of three Aegis-equipped destroyers which the South Korean Navy will develop by 2012 under a program code-named KDX-III, the Navy said in a news release.

From this news, I’m guessing we’ll be able to see the outline of this ‘Super Burke’ in 2~3 years worth of time. They released some specs for this ship:
Length: 165m
Width: 21m
Height: 6.25m – I’m guessing height of the hull from the waterline?
Armaments include
-80 Mk41 VLS-Strike Length: ESSM, SM-2MR, SM-3
-48 Domestic VLS system: Cruise missiles, K-ASROC system
-16 SSM-700K or Harpoon Block 2
-Goalkeeper CIWS, RAM
-Mk-45 Mod4 UD gun
KDX-3 will be equipped with SPY-1D Baseline 7

I wonder if the US will reconsider selling Aegis Destroyers to Taiwan?

The VLS heavyweights……
The VLS Ticonderoga-class CG: 122 armed cells
The Arleigh Burke-class DDG: 96 armed cells
The Russian CGN Petr Velikiy: 20+12+128 = 160
The Russian Slava-class CG: 64 cells
The Japanese KONGO class DDG: 96 armed cells
So with that, the new Korean KDX-3 with its 80+48 is doing pretty well!!
Have I missed any heavyweights?

oooohh 128 VLS + 16 harpoon!! that’s got to be one of the most powerful destroyers ever. more missiles than a tico-class cruiser.

Yet another Arleigh Burke incarnation….. Cool. I was hoping to see something a little more original though. 😉
True nonetheless I would like to see the KDX-3 side by side with a Arleigh Burke and Kongo class destroyer. 😀

One of KDX-3’s requirement was TMD capability, so they ordered Baseline 7.1 for it, so I’m assuming SM-3 will be included as well.

Holy moly! That is one muscle-bound ship. Definitely the most powerful in Asia once it comes out. Can’t think of anything on the horizon matching it. I think it outmissiles the Kongo by a good margin, including twice as many AShMs if I recall correctly.

Got any more pics of the model KJ? Baseline 7 AEGIS gives them a TBMD capability if they need or want it. I know the Japanese are going for it with SM-3, have the Koreans shown interest in it too?

The VLS positioned on the helo hanger isn’t Mk48. They’ve got 64 Mk41s in the bow, 16 between the hangers, and 48 just behind it.
The pic isn’t quite right, but shows what I mean.

Those ships will the kick the llama’s ass in that region. They look, spec wise, to be much superior to anything in that region and perhaps Asia. Too bad they will only get three, which means two available at any one time.
