I have recently uploaded a video on youtube, showing a few participants at the Delta Jets Open Day/Fly-in.
Staged on 1st May 2000, several aeroplanes were flown in from their respective home bases into Kemble for a relaxing afternoon.
The clip is just under 7 minutes long, and features three aeroplanes which no longer with us here in the UK, Buccaneer XW986, Gloster Meteor F.8 Winston and Peter Hellier’s superb Hunter F.6A XF516.
It can be viewed at the following address…

Kind regards,
Mark

Just uploaded it now…
Another one just added!
This features the Scandinavian Historic Flight A-26 invader, and at the time the Old Flying Machine Company’s ‘new’ Hunter, T.8C XF357, painted up as the prototype T.7 XJ615.
As said previously, the footage has been ‘grayscaled’, the colour was all over the shop throughout the recording. Some bits were fine, others black/white, most just persistant flashes of colour!
Comments welcome!

Thanks for posting that Les 😮 😀
Keith Hartley brought her in that day, top bloke!
A clip showing the August 2000 event is in progress, but it’s proving to be troublesome! I hope to have uploaded by tomorrow.

Just found this on the Kemble web site…………….topical…
Kemble Airport will be opening its hangar doors again on Sunday 9th September. Kemble Open Day will try to recreate the atmosphere of the old RAF “At Home” Days that were common on most service stations up until the 1970’s. To commemorate Battle of Britain Day there will be a small afternoon flying display featuring a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and an RAF Hawk jet trainer as used by the Red Arrows.
Pleasure flying will be available and Air Atlantique from Coventry will bring along a couple of vintage piston engined aircraft from their collection of 1950’s transport aircraft.
You will get the chance to visit all the flying schools (ASK, BCT, Astra etc.), Ultimate High, the Britannia Preservation Society, Kemble Flying Club and of course Delta Jets, and their outstanding collection of privately owned vintage jets. You may also be able to visit the control tower and view all the visiting light aircraft. Refreshments will be available and the popular AV8 restaurant will be open.
Entry on the day will be £10 per person with children 15 and under going free.

My first Kemble was 1999. Fantastic atmosphere, good crowd and hamburgers and hot dogs by the hangar, Glen whizzing everywhere on his bike, his belt adorned with various comms kit, etc. The Kemble shows in those days (and 2000) seemed better somehow, more user-friendly, more like an open day rather than an air show.

The cross-over Hunters are from the 2000 display. That was a good one. Not just the airfield beat-up at the end (as shown in the video) but the airfield attack against an inflatable tank with the pilot’s transmissions over the tannoy.

Ah you young whipper-snappers haven’t lived! My first air show at Kemble was in August 1964 with the Yellowjacks Gnats formating with the Red Pelicans JPs. 38 Group did their mock-attack with Hunters of 1 Squadron beating up the airfield, Argosies deploying tanks and troops absailing down ropes from several Wessexes. Comet 4C XS235 was outside 5 MU’s paintshop in primer and they had a whole hangar open with a Gnat, Chipmunk, Pembroke, Varsity and Valetta inside. Wonderful day and I have attended every Open Day and event there ever since, during Kemble’s RAF days, USAF days and now Delta Jets. The atmosphere never fails to please!;) Glen and his team keep the nostalgia alive perfectly.

My Kemble duck was broken with the Open Day in August 1999 – XF516 flew in with a yellow nose-wheel door and no Sqn markings.
The Meteor performed ground runs, and the Jordanian Historic Flight F.58 was also in attendance before flying off to Cranfield I think?
There was also one staged in August 2000 and in May 2001.
The latter saw some awful weather, I remember the Golden Apple T-33A taking off, flew into a thunderstorm and came into land again!
The pilot then waited for the storm to pass before taking off again.
I have some footage of the August event which I will be capturing.
It’ll be in black/white though as our camcorder was on its last legs 🙂

Oh yeah….. fond memories
That was my first time assisting at Kemble…. and thanks to Glen I got thrown onto the Visiting Aircraft line up, along with a couple of nice guys from CARG if I recall… It was great fun recreating my old RAF days, with the variety of different types coming in and no idea what to expect next… Was hilarious trying to marshall a WASP down onto the ground inbetween some JP’s, with no idea if there was sufficient clearance apart from the use of Mk1 eyeball….. 😮 I was having a ball as it was a reunion of ex Brawdy kites for me, as we had 1 JP, 1 Hunter, 1 Meteor all in the same place once more – all ex Brawdy veterans. The sight of Winston airborne again was one which I had never dreamt possible after it’s RAF retirement in ’82… but thanks to the guys at Delta, I had only just been down there shortly before the Open Day to witness the full Air Test 😀

Thanks for that, I have some great memories of the open day. When we frirst got there we were waiting to cross the runway to get to the parking area,we were about three cars back from the front when two Hunters landed after a training sortie.
Sitting down for lunch we got covered in grass as the two Yaks parked in front of us and then we were waiting by the car ready to come home when the Hunters did their LOW run and breaks in readiness to land, jeez they seemed close!
Unfortunately ,it caught my son, who was two and a bit at the time, by surprise ,so he was a bit frightened, luckily it hasn’t put him off!
Cheers, Alan.
Ps ,I don’t think they held another open day that reached that standard ,did they?
