I,m taking some holiday in May and would like to go visit some of the museums and sites in Kent, Hawkinge in particular.
Ive not been since 96 so i figured that it was time to go back…
I was going to do it over a couple of days and stay in a lodge between days…
Any recommendations on places to visit, route to take and any general tips…
Many Thanks

Our policy is not to allow photography without prior permission, this I believe is for security & insurance reasons. However, if you ask nicely, something can usually be arranged.
Dez, be aware there are two Geoffs at the museum, so memorise my avatar. Also most of the volunteers there are unaware that I’m vP on here, so it’s best to ask for ‘Geoff Kennell’ if you need to ask.

I have always found this strange. The National Trust (and others) stopped photography on security grounds. Alarm systems and valuables could be identified in advance for planning a robbery.
Hawkinge used to be a more friendly place with someone on hand to answer questions. 2 years ago there was just one person on the entrance. I suppose they don’t have enough volunteers. Perhaps one follows another? 🙁

One big problem with the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge.
They do not allow Photography….
It must be the only museum in the country that will not let visitors take pictures.
I stopped going a long time ago.. It must affect the amount of people that visit them.

Manston History Museum is on the opposite side of the car park to the Spitfire & Hurricane one. Open every day in the Summer, well worth an hour.

Well, you could try The Shoreham Aircraft Museum 🙂 We’re only little, but as they say size doesn’t count, & you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find on display. No aircraft, but relics from our many excavations, ‘souvineered in 1940’ items donated to us, uniforms, Home front memorabilia & much more. Not to mention our world famous tearoom.
We open for the 2004 season on Easter Sunday, 11th April & will then be open every Sunday until the end of September. I can be found there, helping to run the museum every third Sunday, so let me know if/when you’re going to pop in. You can see our website at www.shoreham-aircraft-museum.co.uk and also try the FlyPast issues Sept & November 2003.
We also have nearby, at the airfield, the famous Biggin Hill Chapel.
