So what’s the state of play on Key’s Basset G-FLYP? I see from airliners.net it was flying last December (’05) and the following January a CofA change was received by the CAA. Just after the CofA has expired and the register still says “Change of C of A details in progress”.
Has cost rendered another good-looking aeroplane out of the skies?

Buying Derelict 206’s
I agree wholeheartedly, I have been trying to find those derelicts and then discover who to buy them from!

Basset Bits
Beagle Gent: You need to watch the Liquidity website for all the regular UK MOD aircraft spares tenders but you have to be a registered company to trade with them. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the web address! They trade as Liquibiz and are the UK arm of the US company Liquidity Services Inc – perhaps you can link to them through the US parent. I recall that some time last year a few oddments of Basset stuff came up but I think that most of the MOD stuff is at Boscombe Down supporting the ETPS bird. Even Boscombe Down has been buying up complete aircraft for spares so I suspect that stocks in the UK are getting pretty thin. Can only suggest that you scour the world and buy up any derelict aircraft you find.

Thanks,
I believe I’ve spoken with most of those folks already. I would love to know whatever became of the spares MOD liquidated a few years ago. Also I KNOW the RAF still has some engines and props and other spares squirelled away someplace.. So far no luck finding them.

Beagle Restoration
Hey All,
I have a Beagle B206 Series 1 (Basset Mk1) ex-XS-781 now N46880
that is in need of some parts and spares to get it flying again. I will need the 1 of the older style 2 bladed McCauley props and a right wingtip. Perhaps a pair of ailerons….though I can probably use the old ones.
Take a look at www.starweb.net/beagle for info. I may still sell it with the spare GIO-470-A engine and the rest of the spares….but I’d rather fix it and fly it.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I would be happy to buy out derelicts for parts. Maybe the two in Madrid?
HELP!!!
Rich

I noted during a recent visit that there two Beagle 206s still extant, albeit appearing to be in poor condition (and abandoned?), in the south-east corner of Madrid Barajas Airport.
Perhaps someone could rescue these?
Come on FlyPast, it is your website, give us an answer to the original question about G-FLYP, which does not seemed to have been answered
Phil
The Forum seems to be an orphan as far as Flypast are concerned, they didn’t answer any questions last time I asked about G-FLYP. Thank goodness you have had more success this time although slight, it is progress!

Nice looking or otherwise, the Basset is one of the most over-engineered twins on the planet. Powered doors, no less.
It has sat in the IAE hangar at Cranfield for ages. I assume it is still there.
Its still there just had a new engine fitted.

There were quite a few Beagle 206s registered in the UK in the early 70s.
I remember G-ASOF and G-ATDD being almost permanently in the pattern at Turnhouse. G-AVCG-CJ were also round and about then as were G-ATKO and G-ATKP. Probably there were others but my mind is blank.

Beagle 206
I did my Instrument Rating on Beagle 206s at Gatwick in 1971. There were two, G-ATYC and G-ATHO, operated by Air London. As far as I remember they were nice to fly, but the take-off run seemed interminable.

Thanks for sharing that info. Improves my knowledge of the type by about 100%

As far as I can remember the forces were the only buyers and they only came onto the civil scene when the military got rid of them.
The Beagle 206 (sorry no basset name) was sold in the U.S. It seems 11 B-206 Cs were built along with 44 B. 206Ss (with turbo Continental engines)with many “S” models going to the U.S.
Perhaps in the UK they weren’t offered, but over here they were marketed in the same class as Cessna 310s, Beech Barons and Aero Commanders. I recall color ads in Flying Magazine in the late 60s and a distributor in Florida.
Later in the 80s, I heard they were popular with drug smugglers…where a lot were written off, and more than a few honest planes were stolen.
The 206 also became a minor footnote in U.S. auto history when Ed Cole, a much respected retired president of General Motors, was killed flying his private 206 in 1977.

Something like that, it seems.

The Bulldog is a beast of an entirely different colour.
The Basset was a lemon….
