Hi All;
Just wondering if anyone had any further details of a Heinkel He-111 of KG-53 that crash landed near Great Wakering in 1940? I’m aware of the details in Battle of Britain: Then and Now, but wonder if anyone has any extra information? I’m particularly interested in the markings as the book doesn’t seem to list the werke nummer etc, also which gruppe the Heinkel was attached too.
Likewise, Any further info on the Bf-110 which crash landed at North Shoebury corner on September 3rd 1940 would also be greatly appreciated. I know it was attached to ZG-26.
Many thanks in advance..
Regards;
Steve

Hi Beaufighter VI;
Once again, many thanks! You seem to be a greater font of knowledge than Google!
I did find some additional info that showed the yellow rudder markings, which seem to be unique to III/ZG 26. I think I now have a clear picture of the markings this aircraft would have worn. Thanks for your help!

The Staffel emblem of 7/ZG26 was a penguin carrying an umbrella.
See page 201, ‘Zerstorer’ by Vasco & Cornwell, published 1995.

Hi All;
Thanks for the very helpful information so far…
I’m intrigued by the Bf-110’s marking of the penguin with the red umbrella…would this have been 7th Staffel’s unit marking? I’ve tried Googling away like crazy, but can’t find any reference to the individual Staffel markings for ZG-26. Either that, or this is a personal marking, in which case, it will be nigh on impossible to determine what this marking looked liked.

Information is taken straight from official reports, so difficult to say what the markings were.

Hi Beaufighter VI;
Many, many thanks for that! I couldn’t imagine that I would get the individual engine numbers for the Bf-110! That’s just brilliant! It’s also really helpful to hear of some of the markings, especially on the Bf-110. It’s nigh on impossible to gain much information from the angle of the photo in battle of Britain Then and Now!
The Heinkel intrigues me though. 20 kills seem a bit optimistic on the gunners part. Would it be safe to assume that these were actually mission markings?
Great info, and just what I needed. many thanks again!

Hi Paul..
Thanks for the info. One of the things I was looking for was the staffel that this Heinkel was attached to. I know that KG53 colour coded their spinners in staffel colours…I wonder what colour 9th staffel would have been?
