Killer Cucumbers

When this first broke I had a little snigger that it is only organic ones. 10 dead now, it isn’t funny. It’s only organic, in Germany, exported from Spain.

There were a glut of them on shelf at Lidl this morning.
I love ’em, but not eating them at the moment, just in case…………..as he pops outside for a ciggy LoL.

I wonder how long it will be before France imposes an illegal ban on importing British vegetables! :diablo:

It took them a while but France has at last linked the E-coli outbreak to a British import:

I didn’t fight my way to the top of the food chain to be killed by a cucumber.

E Coli is quite well known, but any as aggresive as this one. So, maybe a new type which could have been created artificially in any laboratory?. We all know that they´re usually lots of games with this stuff in many medical/scientifical centre and sometimes they are just released by any reason. I am not saying on purpose but accidents do happen.

I am surprised about how resistant to antibiotics is this germ.

Wasn’t there someone talking about lack of evidence for Darwinian evolution on another thread? 😎

Yes, any death is sad,but a sense of perspective is required. Over reaction and the need for a good story will has unnecessarily kicked the Spanish salad industry.

Maybe, but risk is risk, whether you’re killed by a JCB or a cucumber.

I once had a colleague lecture me on how she’d never eat beef again because of the risks of BSE (the risk being six-million-to-one at the time IIRC) while she puffed away on a cigarette (risk being twenty-to-one IIRC)!

That’s mixing Apples and JCB’s Creak.

I moan about E-coli whilst on my fag break. Same twist.

Interesting how people and governments react to a new threat; last time I checked six people a day were killed in road-accidents in the UK, and the UK has an enviable record on road-safety, but none of us would think twice about using our cars.

Fortunately this latest ‘scare’ hasn’t affected my consumption of cucumbers…..I can’t stand the damn things anyway!

From the latest reports it would appear that the BBC is wrong – not for the first time. Quoting fiction as fact is a symptom of the need to be the first with a story. As one of our members has as his signature – “never let the facts get in the way of a good story”.

Well, “Wrong” isn’t the word. They reported the breaking news from Germany. Now discounted as the Cucumber but source unknown. 17 dead.

Of all the news agencies in the World, I’d sooner trust the BBC than any of them.

The Soviets have jumped on the “Ban ’em” campaign now too.
Quote BBC…”The country’s chief medical officer said EU-produced vegetables would be seized across Russia”.

If it wasn’t for the 17 souls and 1,500 illnesses, this would be a very good Monty Python sketch!

You are right – nothing has been proved yet. We suffered far worse with the cattle disease which was shown after the event to have been a massive over-reaction from just about everyone involved and decimated our beef industry for years. Such is the nature of foul rumour. So be thankful it is only cucumbers!!:)

What foul rumour?
The BBC stated the only cases of the E-coli were found on Organic cucumbers exported from Spain into Germany. Nobody doubted the Spanish Cucumbers for quality etc. I eat lots of them mesen.
It must be something like dirty water (For washing them) at one particular Poly-farm.
The Lidl (German shop) had a glut of them, so people had associated hte German connection. And, as I have a 2 year old I’m not taking the risk for a week or two.
The death toll is now at 14, it’s a bit more than a rumour.

Actually it hasn´t anything to do with the Spanish cucumbers which are excellent. Millions of Spaniards eat cucumbers at a daily basis (in fact is a vital part of Gazpacho) and we don´t have a single illness case. Today analysis have shown that cucumbers are safe.

I wonder why some words said without thinking about the implications could harm a sector such as agriculture in Spain. We are not amused about it.

It’s the way agriculture is going. When I read about cucumbers killing people words failed me but then I thought just look at China and their exploding water melons. The world is dangerous enough without our food being played around with as well.
