Kinder Scout Sabres

Took a yomp along the north edge of Kinder Scout, and then descended to Black Ashop Moor to see the remains of the 66 Sqn Sabres, XD707 & XD730 that crashed in July 1954.

A trail of wreckage on Kinder itself, culminating in this pile of collected pieces

Thanks for the pics! I have a book that has pictures taken of the site in the 80’s Looks like everything is pretty much still there. The reason for the crashes was a suspected mid-air collision, apparently witnessed by a rambler in the valley, although I believe the official records state they flew into Kinder in cloud.

I wonder why there are sections of the tyre cut away ?

Jules

Probably, as posted by avion ancien its on E-bay ! (as Spitfire parts?)

It is nice to see a memorial though, especially to a “peacetime” incident.

Probably because of the type more than anything else, and of course its location.
Can’t imagine so much still being in situ if it was Spitfire related?!

I just amazed that, in these days, there’s so much wreckage still there and it hasn’t been spirited away in order to be sold on eBay!
