Always interesting to read through and then put into practice without having to rely too much on using auto.My biggest problem is using different settings and being afraid to mess up a good image in the viewfinder. Thanks anyway for posting some of your tips….cheers:)

Hi Chris,
A very well written set of articles! It’s really nice to see emphasis being put on the importance of understanding the histogram. It’s something so often ignored by people who perhaps think it doesn’t need to be used, but to get the best out of digital it has to be used so it’s great to see it mentioned. I’ve rejected countless hundreds of otherwise very good images on the site I screen for because they were overexposed, yet a simple check of the histogram will reveal the problem.
One point that I couldn’t see made is the fact there are two types of histogram -luminosity and RGB- and it’s the luminosity histogram that must be used for judging exposure. Many people wrongly use the RGB histogram and overcompensate, ending up with an image lacking contrast so I think it’s quite important to make sure people understand the difference between the two and why we use them for different purposes.
Has to be said though I’m a bit of a histogram freak, I can go on for hours about it! In fact I have done – here’s something I wrote and it’s quite interesting to see how different people approach writing tutorials.

That’s the only thing I’d personally have mentioned in addition to what you wrote. All in all an excellent set of tutorials and I’m sure a lot of people will find them very useful. 🙂

Don’t know why other people haven’t commented, but I enjoyed the read. I like your writing style and Kiss “Keep it simple stupid” explanations.
Some great shots too.
