KLM and AF launch 777F

Bonjour,

summary from the French newspaper “La Tribune”. It’s been a while since I had French class, but I know I got the rough lines right.

Air France chooses new Boeing cargo plane.

Air France is about to sign up for the new 777 cargo plane. A move which will be shared by its big ally KLM.

Found this english link. Reuters in addition says there will be seven 777Fs at a total value of 1.5 billion dollars. The 777s will be replacing part of the 747 fleet starting late 2008.

A few years ago in the german mag Flug-Revue, I remember seeing Airbus concept designs showing a A346-type aircraft with a front wings (canards) near the cockpit like on the Tu-144 SST.

Would this design feature help long aircrafts from suffering tailstrikes ???

Even bigger? The 773 looks disproportional as it is!

Well, as long as it is efficient it will be build. Looks are of course of secondary concern. I am a bit worried though about the likelyhood of tailscrapes. The few 773s I have seen rotating came very close to the runway already.

The a340-600 is longer than the 773. Yet it does not suffer tailstrikes any more often that any other aircraft.

B777 report

Some information from the B777F published in the german mag “Flug-Revue April 2005”.

Boeing will deside this year, if the B777F, based on the B777-200LR, will be built. The B777F will carry 101 tons cargo and will have a range from 8980 km(full loaded) to 9630 km(less loaded). The side cargo door will be 3,05 meters high and 3,53 meters wide.

I shoot a pic of a cockpit layout drawing from page 25 with my camera.
Just behind the cockpit there willl be room for a rest room with 2 beds, 3 seats for couriers, a kitchen and wash room. A sliding door will allows access to the cargo bay.

Boeings B777 Programm boss Lars Anderson also told Flug Revue, that they are thinking about the future of the B777. First ideas are a B777 with B787 elements or a “longer” B777-400.

EDIT:
Source: BOEING ROLLS OUT LONG-RANGE “WORLDLINER”

….
By then, Boeing will also have decided on the programme launch of the latest family member of the 777 series, the 777 freighter, a derivative of the 777-200LR. The 777F will be able to carry 101 tonnes of freight and fly a range of 8,980km fully loaded or 9,630km with slight weight restrictions. The voluminous windowless fuselage of the 777F, which will not have any rear doors either, will have a 3.05 metre high, 3.58 metre wide freight door to the side. The pilots’ rest room is to be moved from the roof area directly behind the cockpit bulkhead into the main deck so as to create more height on the cargo deck, with reinforced floor and cargo handling system. As in the 747-400, the pilots will have bunk-beds. A small kitchen, WC and three Business Class seats for flight attendants will complete the nose area of the cargo plane.

If the planned 777F attracts sufficient interest by the summer and Boeing launches the programme, deliveries could commence at the end of 2008. The new cargo plane would be a welcome boost to the demand for the 777-200LR, which is still somewhat weak. On the other hand, it is likely to compete strongly with Boeing’s ageing 747-400, which now seems to be relying solely on freighter orders. In case Boeing cannot make up its mind finally to launch a stretched 747 Advanced by the summer, 777 programme director Lars Andersen is apparently already thinking about the future of his baby “Triple Seven”. “We are studying everything,” he told FLUG REVUE. “For example, a 777 with 787 technology. But recently we have also been thinking about another stretch, the ‘777-400’.”

aren’t they likely to have the rearmost pax door as the 747F does, too?

no details as yet on the exact door config.
