Appologies if this has been posted before… But… 😮

At Kai Tak, as at any airport, the go around can be initiated from any point on the approach, just care must be taken to follow the intended track as opposed just following the instructions. By this I mean that a go around initiated prior to the missed approach point must fly over the missed approach point before any turns are made. May sound obvious but I have seen many guys mess it up in the sim. I a situation like Kai Tak there was a seperate procedure for going around after passing decision altitude but it is far too long ago for me to remember.

To be honest a go around at Kai Tak had to be called long before this point….there was the small matter of Lion Rock in the way too!!

Not as far as I know.
David2386 – My sentiments exactly. Even after all these years flying I still run through the GA drill on every approach. A landing is a bonus!

Wasnt this a cargo plane which nearly went off the runway because the tyres blew?

Every approach is a set up to a go-around, only convert it to a landing at the last minute 😀 I always liked looking at it like that.

With the Koreans it is more a loss of face to go around than it is to continue to land. It was a major finding of their safety audit that occurred after losing the 744 in Guam. Anyone in their right mind would have thrown that one away especially as companies now actively encourage that mindset opposed to the get it on the ground at any cost one.
I believe there is a cracking one of an MAS 744 doing similar and actually doing the engine and wing tip in. I’ve got in the archives here somewhere if you can’t find it.

I don’t think any airline serves drinks on short finals
There’s always one ain’t there?
Steve, mate… If you over analyse the joke, it don’t work… 😀

the Pilot Flying actually greased the landing
He sure did.
I suppose that means I’m an ace pilot, as ALL of my landings in FS9 are like that… 😮
Whoa!!! Get down yer Bu**er…
😀 😀 😀

And Deano…
I get your point, but it could have quite easily ended in disaster.
Surely a “Go-Around”, and the expense of a missed slot is preferable to (what could be around) 400 dead Pax.
Absolutely true, but, if you watch the video again you will see that really the landing was a non event, the Pilot Flying actually greased the landing, he wasn’t even close to an engine pod strike like some of the pictures I have seen, end of the day the crew were happy to continue the landing, and they did a good job, if there had been a strong cross wind as stated then I’m sure that would have been a whole different story 🙂

Brilliant to watch but why on earth did he not go around ?
This is what I thought when I first saw it.
Must have been a Hell of a decision to actually land.

probably because it would have cost the airline a good £5,000 or more, commercial pressures & all that 🙂

If I remember rightly this wasn’t a heroic battle with a cross-wind, rather they completely cocked up the approach and only just got away with it.
1L.
Yes, I think thats right. It was a regular problem, and there are loads of good photos of this sort of landing at Kai Tak on Airliners.net. One that I can think of that could be searched would be All Nippon Cargo B747. Having said that I don’t think I ever saw a Cathay aircraft in such a compromising position…so perhaps a little Kai Tak experience was also necessary! It was easy to overshoot the turn also from what I understand.

Must have been one hell of a pilot… I would imagine there was a fair bit of cross wind

Is this REAL??!!! Must have been one hell of a pilot. They really prepare for everything in simulators….
But seriously, how?? I would imagine there was a fair bit of cross wind?
By: Pte1643 - 26th June 2006 at 19:40
Figured as much, but couldn’t find it in a search.
It’s the first time I’d seen it.
Appologies again. 🙂

Posted before, but great to see again! The hovering is really nice.
