L Fletcher Collection, Derby

I came across a 1970’s Smithsonian Museum record of aircraft engines held by Museums and a ‘L Fletcher Collection’ was recorded as having a Napier Dagger. Does anybody know about this collection and what became of the Dagger engine? Thank you, Ed.

You’re welcome, Ed. I’ll remind my friend to look for photos, but hope you get lucky with the address.

Cheers for now

Hi powerand passion

I had the pleasure of visiting Laurie Fletcher & his amazing collection, with a friend of mine, many years ago now. He was a lovely chap but I know that, sadly, he died in November 2001.

I do not know what happened to his collection, but my friend has offered to look to see what photos he has from our visit. If any of a Dagger come to light, I will let you know. My friend was also able to confirm that Laurie’s address was 40 Quarn Drive, Allestree, Derby. DE22 2NQ. He believes that Laurie died there and left a son who, at the time of Laurie’s death, was living at the same address.

Perhaps it would be writing to that address, to see if Laurie’s son is still there?

I hope this helps

Andrew

TonyT, thanks for the links. Silver Biplanes is the scrapyard recovery Dagger in the photo.

Feroxeng, the engine bearers in the photo came from the Hector remains used in the restoration of Demon G-BTVE. So they are not lost and happily reunited with other Dagger and Hector remains. Just need more Dagger material to make those 24 cylinders roar at 5,000 rpm again.

If you google ‘cloughjordan hector key aero forum’ you’ll find that this is a topic which has been much discussed hitherto on this forum!

I can’t resist asking what happened to the oh-so-distinctive Dagger engine mount that was in the Cloughjordan Hector in the early 1960s. The aircraft was used to recreate a non-Hector biplane by Viv Bellamy and Skysport, so the engine mount wasn’t used. I hope someone saved it, so do we know where it is?

By way of compensation for bumping a thread I add a photo of a Hector, but it needs more Dagger please.
