La Ferte Alais, how to get there…

Which is the better place to fly into, Charles de Gaulle or Orly? Not strictly speaking of the airport itself, more about getting to La Ferte Alais in the simplest manner.

Just looked at the dispaly list and would love to go again but a hernia op last week means I can’t even make the end of the road at the moment. Pleasure flights in a JU52 or AN-2 and the Caudron Racer from the states have got to be the icing on the cake.
The owner of the Caudron was hoping to come to the UK and was planning an appearance at Old warden so lets hope that happens.

I fly into GdG and pick up a hire car from AVIS, then round the old Périphérique to the A6 and then south.

It’s straight forward motoring to be honest.
I have flown into Orly on occasion too, which is much closer. There are plenty of hire cars places there too, although I usually book on line before I travel at both airports.

Enjoy LFA, it’s a great occasion.

Andy.

I suppose flying and hiring is cheaper but would you be tempted to go on the H/D now, that would be an experience:)

To quote a member of this forum. “Driving around the Périphérique is character building”

Just got a hotel room in Evry. Are there any other members of this esteemed forum planning to attend? Could possible be a good time for a get- together.

As long as you aren’t ferrying idiots – thanks Andy (and the other late-night-deliverers…)

James, the pleasure was all mine.

In 1986 of course, you didn’t get a SPAD, Fokker D.VII and two Morane AI’s (one doing aeros)–plus the added delights of the after show entertainment.:):):)

TJ,
most people stay in or around Evry, which although it looks a French Milton Keynes has a number of suitable motels, hotels etc. It’s also about twenty minutes drive from LFA.

The problem with the whole LFA thing is that you really need a car.
If you don’t have a car, you’ll suffer.
It’s just so much easier.

By loooking at Google Earth I seem to find a railway station south of the airfield.

You also need trains to run from / to the stations. IIRC, there were trains, but we decided it wasn’t viable in the end.

We stayed at Campanile Corbeil Essonnes – Evry. corbeilessonnes@campanile.fr

There are other, closer/more convenient places, but it was a good motel with very helpful staff. We’d recommend it, no problem.

By loooking at Google Earth I seem to find a railway station south of the airfield. By measuring the road up to the airfield I get a distance of 2.7km. That is not too bad. I usually walk from Duxford down to the Red Lion which is about 2km. I’d prefer not to have to deal with a car if possible. The next question will be accomodation, as I assume most places nearby will be booked solid by now. Any ideas?

Absolutely, and as one poster said earlier, it’s a ‘must do’ if you are serious about vintage aviation. Great though it is, it’s not what it was – the 1986 show was rather excellent…

Never been, would love to go: considered it as an “add on” when I have been to Paris Airshow but when I looked at getting there on public transport it did not look straight forward as confirmed by this post.

Anyone from the North of England fancy a joint trip? PM me.

I acheived a lifetime wish by going to La Ferte Alais about 20 years ago. Unfortunately the day was marred by a pre show fatal crash which delayed the display for a long time but once it got under way it was a great show.
I went by coach with a UK aviation society and it appeared to me that unless you had a car access would be almost impossible as it seemed to be in the middle of nowhere.
A great place with a great atmosphere and every vintage aircraft enthusiast should go at least once.

Le Ferte Alais

I would confirm about the car. I have been there several times in my own car and I thought about how lucky I was: Orly is in the south of Paris and much closer than CDG which is in the NE. If you attempt to travel by train or bus you will eventually need a Taxi. The airfield itself is on top of a hill so there is much walking So why not a rent-a-car the entire time and you are much more mobil. Check it out on GoogleEarth. They have a very nice Cafe, thats the only problem with your own car (nice wine for lunch). Have Fun!

We flew into Orly last year. Our Friday night ‘plane was delayed which didn’t help. We used a mix of taxis, trains and lifts from friends, as we were staying locally, but not right in LFA. It was a pain all around (inc to our friends!) Next time we’d hire a car, which would have been cheaper and a lot easier.

So what you’re basically saying is that this is “Planes, trains, and automobiles” and undoubtedly I’m playing the role of Steve Martin… 😮

If you choose to use public transport the walk to the airfield from the station is fairly long (far longer than mentioned in Bob Ogden’s book) and the last bit is uphill. I was k-nackered by the time I got there when I visited a couple of years ago 😮
