Hope this post is not classed as advertising.
but saw this news item and I’ll never think of a switch in the same way again.
His first lesson on January 19, 1957 included some advice about the switches on the Tiger Moth – “Think of it as ladies’ knickers old boy; when they are down they are off and when they are up they’re on, OK?” 🙂
Anyone else heard of that expression?

As taught to me by my first instructor, Paddy Moran,ex RNZAF, in the early fifties. For those wondering about this rendering, the mag switch on the Tiger was the same animal as many English types. When down (OFF position) they were actually making contact i.e.ON but in doing so earthed out the primary coil output of the magneto, thereby turning the mag OFF.
His pre takeoff check was also a bit on the off side for my then rather tender ears. TMPFFIHCT…. Teachers May Pay For F…. In High Country Towns. Hmmmmm rather un PC these days but I have found that some of my students remember their checks very well when acquainted with Paddy’s little line.

To go one step on from the way to remember how to use a spoon: push your soup – pull your pud. When transferring fuel remember that the pumps should be put on before you open the relevant c0ck – you won’t get any pleasure from c0cking your pump, but if you pump your……… well you get the idea!

Excellent, reminds me off the expression “Knobs and teats”to describe items in the cockpit. One pulls knobs and squeezes Teats, apparently:rolleyes:
