LAM Mozambique Airlines at Southend…

A rather nice catch this afternoon was a ‘new’ 737 for LAM Mozambique Airlines being towed to the maintenance hangar after having been repainted. It was formerly N614SC with Air Zambezi; which I photographed back in June:

And today in its equally exotic new guise just before the sun went in:

And one more, slightly less exotic recent visitor at Southend was G-ZEBS the ‘new’ Blue Island ATR42. Unfortunately it cannot operate into LCY, so 2 evening rotations instead operated into Southend, with the passengers being bused from London City. Unfortunately G-ZEBS arrived 15 minutes after sunset, but I still managed a reasonable shot.

Once again, I hope these are of interest!

Thanks 27vet for the technical explanation. If it is ‘almost’ as good as paint, it is interesting why it is not used more commonly (having said that perhaps it is, but it is difficult if not impossible to tell).

usaf2103, think they still do have the 732s in the fleet. Can imagine that flying on them would be an interesting experience. I assume this 737 will be replacing one though.

I am glad they got rid of their 732’s, those planes were scary as hell or maybe it was just the pilots 😉

The transfers would last depending on where they are placed, how strong they are and how they are adhered. If you look closely at the surfaces of any jet airliner you will see the sandblasting effect of the air where it initially contacts the surface. Beyond that point, the surface is relatively protected by the boundary layer.

Great link MSR777, for such a small airline LAM have had quite a varied fleet. Excellent stuff.

Think you’re quite right about the transfers ~Alan~. I do wonder how well they would last compared to paint, probably not long in comparison I think!

LAM also operated an Il62at one time, usually on it’s long haul routes, one of which being Berlin-Schonefeld.

keithnewsome – Yes it was done by Air Livery, painted at lightning speed as well, it only took 4 days which is far shorter than I have ever known before. They must have been working around the clock.

Must have been a “helluv” a job getting those transfers on without creasing them, and a massive saucer of water 😀

Thanks for all your responses again.

MSR777 – Seems to be an entry on LAMs wikipedia page (of all reliable places) which would support your sighting in Berlin before the wall fell.

Glad you’ve seen photos of yet another ‘gem’ Culpano at Southend…

8674planes – Thanks also, and it was a surprise to me to see it in that livery, an airline which I had not heard of (perhaps unsurprisingly) before.

27vet – Very interesting to see that photo, the world of aviation seems so small. Thanks so much for positing that.

I took this picture of one of their aircraft at Johannesburg Airport (ORTIA – JNB – FAJS) just recently :

Note the South African reg. Seems like they register nothing at home.

Nice shots. I can remember seeing the Mozambique DC10 some years ago, whilst I was on a ‘pre fall of the wall’ visit to Berlin Schonefeld.

Thanks all for your comments.

~Alan~ The first and third were taken by the ambulances outside Viscount House. The LAM Mozambique was photographed by the flying clubs.

The aircraft should be re-registered soon, expected to take up C9-BAP.

My understanding is that G-ZEBS hasn’t got some of the necessary equipment required for the steep approach at LCY. It is a very early ATR, and has only been recently acquired from Atlantique Air Assistance after G-DFRC was written off at Jersey.

ATR 42’s and 72’s are approved for LCY operations.

Nice shot 🙂 Why can’t the ATR operate into LCY? Isn’t it certified for the approach?

Nice pictures. Are these taken from where the ambulances usually park ?
