Lanc over Derwent, any good spots to watch?

Hi All
Hopefully on the 16th I will be going to the Dambuster celebration at the Derwent dam. Has anyone got any tips as to where to watch and photograph from?
Also I have seen elsewhere that the Lanc had an issue with No 4 engine and had to shut it down mid-flight. It was believed to be a faulty reading so fingers crossed she won’t grounded for to long.

just seen a tweet from OC BBMF stating the Typhoon scrubbed due to poor weather at low level…

Seen a post elsewhere from someone that was there that the Typhoon did a flypast about 15 mins after it was announced it was cancelled and most people had left or were leaving……

Too windy for the Lanc, that is fine and quite understood.

But what about rustling up a C-130, or even a A-400, to mark the occasion? There used to be so many thing we could do, which now are, for some reason, just too difficult. It is the 100th year of the RAF, if that means anything.

I have probably been reading too much this week about the Air Training Corps gliding organisation and its total collapse over the last few years, due to chronic incompetence and MOD mismanagement.

^^^^ I have to disagree with you on that one i’m afraid,it is very windy here and i really don’t think it is worth putting any aircraft or people in danger .If it was wartime it would be different .I remember going to the BoB 50th and the Spitfires and Hurricanes couldn’t take off so they just had to taxi .

You might have hoped they could postpone, and slip it a couple of hours, but so much easier, I suppose to cancel.

Good old RAF and their (no) ‘Can-Do’ attitude. Let’s hope if we ever have to go to war, it is on a sunny day.

Disappointing. Again.

A Typhoon from the OCU. Should have been a bomber squadron Tornado.

If………it’s on and that seems a big if….I found a great place up on a national trust walk called hollin clough. If your facing the dam head to the right hand tower and go to the top of it footpath up the side of it and walk to the first bridge. Turn right up the side of the bridge and follow the footpath! I.warn you it’s a fair old climb (I was practically dead in my feet) but after a while the dam comes into view behind you and it all becomes worth while!

Looks like the wind is going to force the Lancaster to cancel 🙁

I’m thinking the summit of Win Hill between Hope & Bamford might not be a bad spot, it’s a steep climb up there from either Yorkshire Bridge or Hope station though. That way you’ll see the aircraft leaving the valley on their way south.

If you stand by the road just above the reservoir, you’ll be well-placed to catch the Lanc as it approaches the dam, with the hill behind it. That’s where my picture was taken from five years ago.
Otherwise, there are fairly well-marked rights of way over the Derwent moors opposite, which will give you plenty of top-side view as the plane passes over the dam beneath you.
As for car parking, it can be very, very tricky. Either arrive extremely early by car and park by the dam, or do what I did and arrive by motorbike, weaving through the cones blocking the approach road access to the dam from the A57. Police were in attendance and they didn’t bat an eyelid. Otherwise, there’s a car park on the A57 about a mile and a half to the east of the dam, or on the A6013 by the side of the Ladybower reservoir, but I suspect both will fill up pretty quickly.

thanks for the tips. I am aiming to be in the area for around 8 in the morning so hopefully parking should be a bit easier.

Wherever you decide to go, get there very early as there will be road closures and one way routes put in place. The signs are up already

I may be going too, look at some of the two Lanc vids to get some ideas, my other thought was the reservoir as it may be easier to shoot, but you will not get views looking down on it there.
