Lanc. prop stolen from Bourn

On 9th January 2001 members of the Royal Netherlands Air Force salvage team visited Bourn to return a propellor from a Lancaster which had been recently excavated in Holland.

The aircraft was a Mk III – JB659, fuselage number OF-J that took off from Bourn at 17:10 GMT on January 30th 1944. The aircraft was returning from a raid on Berlin and was shot down by a Messerschmidt 110 nightfighter on its return home.

The propellor was to be used as part of a memorial to be built at Bourn Airfield. Unfortunately, some time during the last two weeks the propellor has been stolen from the Rural Flying Corps’ premises at Bourn.

The Rural Flying Corps would be most interested to receive any information which might lead to the return of this piece of history to its rightful home.

That sums up my feelings. Our organisation was involved with the investigation and eventual recovery of this particular Lanc.

Anyone on this forum that does’nt understand our sentiments has’nt had to put up with these low lifes 😡

not quite Trumper.

I think I know the section of society you mean and yes, they are extremely undesirable to say the least and I know full well what an annoyance they can be but Im just not comfortable labelling people in groups and saying they are bad/good etc.

Who knows who has stolen this item, it could be someone who travels around in caravans, it could be an actual bonefide gypsy, it could be a chav, a pikey, a scally whoever. It could just as easily be an avaition enthusiast or anyone else. I d rather just wait for the criminal to be caught and duly punished rather than screaming that pikeys did it and that we should string them up.

Ah, yes… sorry about that… was just using highly unofficial Cambs Police terminology for the, erm, ‘people’ who live at the sites in Sandy, St Neots. Mate of mine is on Cambridgeshire, and reliably informs me they are widely referred to by the Boys in Blue as “TGB’s”…

😀

Steve,i live near the Pikey /diddies/ TGB’s ,a blot on the landscape and on human nature, you have my sympathies as well.Anyone on this forum that does’nt understand our sentiments has’nt had to put up with these low lifes 😡

Either way, they are a very low form of life indeed. Have you contacted Ken Ellis? In the past FP has been very sympathetic towards groups who have been the victim of theft.

They could even be chavs….

Maybe Steve meant “Pikey” then, or whatever your local phrase for thieving scavengers that live in caravans is 🙂

Sounds like Pikeys to me – the nasty scrotes will have anything away.

Sorry dhfan, I obviously forgot the ‘boil the remains in old castrol gtx before spreading it out in a farmyard and inviting cows to poo on them’ bit. A thousand pardons sir… 😀

theiving gypsy *******s concerned being hung drawn quartered and finally shot. (Probably just wishful thinking on that last bit though…)

Gypsy,

1 : a member of a traditionally itinerant people who originated in northern India and now live chiefly in south and southwest Asia, Europe, and No. America

just thought you might like to know what a gypsy actually is as opposed to your tabloid newspaperesque version of what you think they are, the definition strangely doesn’t mention that they have a tendency to steal things ( including propellors ).

Im in agreement though with the general sentiment that the thieves are ……well I shall watch my language, you get the drift.

best regards, steve

Not just the local community, but also the aviation community too. I’ve seen this post on PPRuNe as well this morning, so word is getting out to the Historic Aviation and Museum community that there is a nicked ex-Lancaster propeller out there somewhere, which I would hope means that there’s more of a likelihood of it being located and returned to RFC, and the theiving gypsy *******s concerned being hung drawn quartered and finally shot. (Probably just wishful thinking on that last bit though…)

Not something that can be easily carried – no chance that it’s a more serious, organised theft? Whatever, they’re still scum.

Might be worth keeping an eye on Ebay.

It is a sad reminder of today’s soul-less society. Worth keeping an eye on ebay.

I am at a loss as to what kind of thrill is to be had by stealing a war relic, God knows they can’t sell it for anything but scrap (heaven forbid). I’mfirm in the belief there is a special place in he** for people who do things like this.

I wish you the best of luck in recovering it!

The Bunch of thieving B*******!

I do hope that someone does the honest thing and return the propellor I do not know what people think these days they not only stole a piece of aircraft they also stole the memory of those that had fallen in JB659.
