True, the more famous types do tend to get more recognition than other equally-deserving aircraft. Well, if it’s any consolation, when I own my own Lanc, you’re very welcome to formate your Mossie with it mate!:-)

RE: Lancaster 60th

I know this is a bit belated, but, at least the Lancaster had it’s 60th anniversary of it’s first operational sortie, recognised! The Mosquito didn’t!!!! 17th September 1941. I wonder if anyone will bother with, perhaps the NF II or B IV’s first operational sorties?
27th April & 31st May 1942 respecively.

RE: Lancaster 60th

Neilly, you’re right there. The coverage of the Augsburg raid struck a particular chord with me as I read it on the train to Heathrow on Thursday before flying out here. The track took us about 30nm to the south of Augsburg, according to the seat-back GPS (dead good, these A340’s!), and it only took about 75-90 minutes flight time. As I looked down at the twinkling lights of southern Germany from my warm comfortable A340 window seat at 35000 feet, I couldn’t help but think of what Nettleton and the other crews must have gone through sixty years before. Lest we forget.

RE: Lancaster 60th

Hi there Lancman.

I’m celebrating this anniversary by joining the Forum !!

My passion is the Lancaster, needless to say, and in particular ‘NX611’ (alias G-ASXX as I first knew her).

My association with “Sexy X”, as we used to affectionately call ‘her’, started in 1968 at the Biggin Hill Air Fair.

From that moment I was hooked !!

I continued my close association with the ‘old girl’ until ‘her’ sad demise at Blackpool and subsequently watched in admiration as ‘she’ gradually came back to life over the years.

I can honestly say that I have never felt quite so nostalgic as when I reassociated myself with the beautifully restored ‘lady’ at East Kirby in August of 2000. The Panton brothers really have done ‘her’ proud !!

RE: Lancaster 60th

Just the gathering of veterans at Duxford and mentions on the national news, if that counts!!!
