Lancaster armoured glass

This is an interesting item that i found and which seems more common on WW2 SAS armoured jeeps than an aircraft.

If the description is correct does anyone know where it was fitted? In front of, or behind the pilot? Could it be a clear vision version of the pilots head armour?

We dug up loads of these from a dump in Oxfordshire in the 1980’s, I am certain that they are from Halifax’s , not Lancs.
They were only fitted on the early models.
And yes were also modified for the SAS jeeps.

I think I’ve already stated my opinion in another thread about these but I can’t find it now. I think the most likely use would have been to protect the crew member in the astrodome when acting as fire controller, i.e. when actually under attack, and directing and co-ordinating the gunners. Mostly daylight use, of course. It would explain the heating valve, i.e. to prevent it frosting up at a critical moment.

Just my two penn’orth.

We have two of these, still don’t know what they’re for.
