Lancaster Bomber update

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-12-02 AT 04:38 AM (GMT)]Just to update everyone on our Lancaster..
We now have most electrical circuits completed to allow the ground running of the number three engine. The propellor is now off of this engine including all cowlings etc. The prop spinner has also been all stripped down and repaired and repainted. I will try and post some piccies of the missing prop etc tomoorow.

RE: Lancaster Bomber update

Peter,

Thanks for the info. I was wondering where the original CWH Lancaster’s wheels and tires ended up. I guess both flying Lancaster’s use the Avro Lincoln wheels and undercarriage.

Technical question for Lancaster type fans..are the Lancaster tires used on the Lincoln wheels the same size as those used on the original Lancaster Wheels..? and are they the same size used on the Avro Shackleton?

RE: Lancaster Bomber update

Andy.
The tires are not original to the aircraft. The original ones were damaged by 30 yrs of sunlight and had warped. The tires that are currently fitted are the original tires that were reconditioned by Air canada for FM213 in Hamilton Ontario. CWH traded these wheels and tires to us as they could not be made airworthy.
The mockup at nanton is a very convincing looking one made out of metal with formers and stringers instead of wood.

RE: Lancaster Bomber update

That sounds great Peter and yes I can imagine that the undercarriage might need some TLC before she gets mobile on a regular basis. As those tires 30 years also?

I remember seeing some Lancaster Cockpit section mockups on the Nanton web site a few years ago..are they wooden mockup or are they build from former aircraft?

RE: Lancaster Bomber update

Hello Andy. Thanks for the nice comments on our museum and Lancaster. We are getting some ideas going as to fundraising for the addition of paving the ramp area in front of the hanger so we can let the old girl stretch her legs. We do have some mino undercarriage inspection and repair to do before this not to mention that the aircraft is presently up on axle stands to save wear on the wheels.
The last time it was painted was in 1991/2 just after she was moved into the hanger from her outdoor home of 30+ years. At last count, there is approximately 6 to 8 layers of paint on her not to mention the original rcaf post war search and recue paint! This may sound terrible but the condition of the aluminum underneath all this paint is factory fresh!!

RE: Lancaster Bomber update

Hi Peter,

I think Nanton’s Lancaster is an excellent example of what can be done on a smaller budget with lot’s of sweat and volunter help. She looks great. I have Nanton on my wish list of places to visit in 2003 or 2004. Is the Lancaster going to be able to get alittle sun in the future for engine starts? Would be a great photo op!

Peter..when was the last repaint done on this Lancaster?

Woo-hoo! Nice pictures! Good to see that you’ve actually got an interior in yours, unlike the CWH machine!
