i was interested to see that someone ‘editing’ the recent bbc tv programme on the belfast blitz failed to recognize that one of the types of a/c blitzing belfast was actually stock footage of the AVRO LANCASTER ………..
a pity – it was actually quite a good documentary !

lancasters over belfast
reading the bbc i-player notes about this programme there is reference to it being : ‘accompanied by state-of-the-art map graphics’ .
clearly time and effort was put into the preparation of this documentary – i wonder why the producers allowed slipshod film material to appear – can it be they weren’t bothered – or weren’t aware ………… ?

It’ll be the same renegade bunch of Lancaster Squadrons which were spotted bombing Sheffield in another BBC “Blitz” production a few months ago.
Good job kids aren’t taught much about WWII history these days or they’d just end up getting confused by it all.

Watched that myself and also noticed the RAF’s treachery in bombing its own people. Plus the early He111s. Wasn’t impressed.

Saw the programme and while disappointed at some of the mistakes made have to say it was very powerfull.

belfast blitz
yes – examples of this kind of thing occur regularly ! out of all the footage that must be available i’m quite surprised by these errors . screen shot of one of the lancaster bloopers attached !

The other day I was watching a documentary biography on President Harry Truman.
When they were talking about the post-war/cold war rearmament efforts, (which he was initally against) did they use shots of the B-36? (Which would have been correct in the context of the carrier vs. bomber controversy).
No.
They showed B-17s…several times intercut with film of him watching a fly past somewhere. But they were brand new and far shinier than I’d ever seen.
A few seconds later they had film of a B-36, B-29, B-17 and A-26 in formation…an interesting shot.

Yes, noticed that, together with some shots of early He111s with the stepped windscreen, and a formation of some other unidentifiable aircraft but which did not look like any Luftwaffe type I recognise. The Lancaster footage appeared a number of times in the programme and was so clear that it should surely have been “caught” before transmission.
