Lancaster FM212 Update

Hello Folks.
Just wanted to let you know that we’re having a very important public meeting coming up with regards to the next step in saving the Lancaster. This is when we’re going to bring our sub-committee’s recommendation forward in which we urge the City to move the Lancaster to the Windsor Airport.

We’re going to need all the support that we can get as we’re still fighting the old perception that the Lanc is okay where it is on top of the pedestal. There is still much resistance to moving the Lancaster, despite all the technical and engineering reports.

The meeting is to take place on Wednesday, April 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the South Windsor Arena, 9555 Pulford Dr. (just off Huron Line)

mossie

The mosquito is a very long term project and could really be called a replic. They are building a new wing for it and a new build fuselage is coming from New Zealand. They will probably be together in the Hangar but it is too early to tell

That does sound like encouraging news Peter, will the lancaster be located near the Mosquito that is in the Airport area? I was told of one being restored but I was never quite sure of it’s location.

WIndsor Lanc

Hello Brit.
Yes fortunately windsors lancaster was never stripped of parts by CWH. They did come down tour the aircraft, and made a list of what they wanted to remove from 212 but were told that nothing is to be removed from the aircraft at all. Apparently they decide to remove all the aircrafts original logs and paperwork and take them home to Hamilton. Fortunately they were returned and make for fascinating reading.

Last nights meeting was a very good one with a great turn out/ I was very pleased to see several WW2 vets present and some of them addressed the meeting with their concerns etc. The committee has decided on relocating the Lancaster to a new site at Windsor Airport. They have three sites to choose from at the airport. Once the new building is up, then the Lancaster can be dismantled and taken to the new facility. The Lancaster will be replaced by a fibreglass Spitfire and Hurricane Fighter one of which will be climbing and the other descending. This will replace the cirrect pedestal mount that the lanc sits on. There is talk of looking at creating a smaller monument at Dieppe and Jackson Park to explain the the Lancaster was first situated on the riverfront when it came to windsor and also that her home for 40 years was Jackson park and that she can now be found at the new Museum at the Windsor Airport.

The next step now is to approach the City of Windsor Council and report on the findings of the three committees and hopefully get the green light to proceed.

I will post updates on the forum when news comes in.

Hi Peter,

Still hope to see the Windsor Lancaster undercover eventually too. Just hope that she never gets as bad as the Toronto Lakeshore Lancaster FM104,,,wow I had a chance to visit her at TAM(Toronto Aerospace Museum) and they have quite the challenge ahead of them…At least the Windsor Lancaster has not be neglected for many years…

Fair enough, sorry to ask these questions but some people will shoot you down in flames here without evidence that she is better where you want to move her to as opposed to where she is. Sound slike you have done your homework but what can we do as a forum?

Shes in poor condition

LS,
I have the report here but not permitted to post as yet. She has cracks in her engine mounting bolt attachments on both inner engines. There is corrosion and a crack in the stbd outer wing attachment mounts.Rivets are beginning to pop in the stbd wingtip and a couple of bolts have snapped that mount her cockpit to the centresection. There is also corrosion in the bombay and the main spars where the floor was torched out.The lower spar is sitting on the concrete with no protection against corrosion.

Have you got the technical report you can post, showing the problems with leaving it verses putting it under cover? Has it got a long term under cover homoe at teh airport?
