Lancaster landing at Duxford

I recall at Flying Legends (christ must have been ten years ago) the BBMF Lanc would land at Duxford some years on the Saturday. I then remember the BBMF restricting the Lanc from landing, but cannot recall why? Was it the runway distance? Im hoping someone can clarify!?

The only reason as i say, is i assume when the new “Lanc Hanger” is constructed that she will need to land there again as and when maintenance/servicing is required?

Hmm, my memory is playing tricks on me. I would have joined the ATC in 1992 so I guess it could have been the Mildenhall incident, I just don’t think I’ve ever been to Mildenhall, but then we were piled in a mini bus and driven to an airfield so it could have been anywhere!

All the Duxford shows I went to in the bomber, we landed on. I left BBMF in 1990. We never had any problems.

I seem to remember back in the 1990’s on an ATC squadron outing to one of the Duxford airshows (can’t remember which) a crosswind gust caught the lanc on landing and she came down rather hard on one Oleo which left her grounded there for some weeks under repair.

Or did I dream it?

I “think” from a long memory ago so i am probably wrong but the Hurricane had undercarriage problems and the Spitfire had to climb up sharpish and go round again. May have been this one http://forum.keypublishing.com/archive/index.php/t-26580.html

Wasn’t that at Mildenhall, and the aircraft was undamaged IIRC

I think you mean 4,500 feet.

The first time I saw the Lancaster at Duxford was the June Air Day 1982 The runway was then 4500ft but I believe it has been extended to the west end. Incidentally In 1985 it was flown in by Sdn/Ldr Tony Banfield an ex Victor Tanker Captain from 214 Squadron who I had flown with in the seventies as his Crew Chief. I worked at all Duxford shows up to 1992 and the BBMF were at all the major shows up to 1992. For the later seventies to early 1980 Stansted was the base it flew from.

I always thought he was nearer 2,000 years ago.

Mike, I don’t always agree with your views but I do like your sense of humour.

It can land at Duxford but needs a 15 knot head wind from memory?

Must be tricky steering an airfield into the wind! 🙂

It can land at Duxford but needs a 15 knot head wind from memory? In the past we used to be based out of Cambridge airport for Duxford weekends as the runway is longer.

Thanks Stewart that makes sense!

Thanks! I posted several times in that thread…

…is this proof that my memory, even for useless information, is finally failing? 🙂

I’m obviously missing something with the BBMF Lancaster coming to Duxford for maintenance and servicing…

…can somebody fill me in?

This may help http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?129916-BBMF-Lancaster-planned-maintenance-2015
