Lancaster ND817, 582 Squadron, Heinz Rokker kill

I’ve recently been very fortunate to acquire the archive of one John TORRANS, who, I believe, was an active 582 Squadron member.

Torrans was one of two crew members who managed to evade capture after their Lancaster, ND817 was shot down on the night of 7/8 August 1944. They were the 40th kill of the Luftwaffe night fighter Ace Heinz ROKKER. I’m at the very early stages of research but hope that someone out there may be able to point me in the right direction for the following queries:

• Does anyone know if the site of ND817 has been identified and/or excavated? According to BCL it crashed at St Vigor d’ Ymonville, on the North bank of the Seine.
• Any leads as to a photo of the aircraft would be appreciated.
• I’m led to believe that Rokker published a book but have been unable to find any details on the publication or indeed if Rokker is still alive and contactable.
• I think that the Squadron association was wound up some years ago but any contact details would be very useful

I realise the chances of results on most, if not all of, the above are slim, but any assistance would be gratefully received- oh and in advance of one suggestion I already have an advance order in for the soon to be published history of 582 Squadron ‘Master Bombers’!

Last I heard, Heinz Roekker was still with us, and very active re: info on wartime ops.

You might try over at the Luftwaffe Experten Message Board, or try to track down Erich Brown, who posts hither and thither.

You might find Roekker’s book with a wee google-fu on: Roekker NJG 2 .

He might also spell it Rökker, though I do think he uses the e.

Edit – you might also try the “German Night Fighter War 1939 – 1945” board.
