Ref the possiility of anyone local doing anything with the wreck, this article puts into perspective the current state of the local economy and low population(200 ) So it is not surprising that nothing has been done apart from the trackway…

Thanks Cees, it was a long time ago that I heard about it and thought it was a scrappie. Incidentally, did the rear turret survive and is it still in the museum?

Peter,

I always thougth that a Swedish AF helicopter recovered the tailplane for display at the AF museum and returned it years later.

From what I understand the rear fuselage was cut up and removed but the person did not have authority to do so and it was returned..

Was it not recovered to a Swedish museum and then reinstated in situ? Slightly twisted logic however it proves the remains could be recovered before they get any worse.

Richard. I agree fully. I wish that the town or someone would look after the remains. It is so jumbled up that anyone not knowing would not recognise it as a Lancaster.

It’s not on a mountain, it’s on a large flat swampy area, near the Stora Lulevatten. It ended up there as the pilot mistook it for meadows when looking for a safe landing spot. It looked that suitable, he even put the gear down. The location is roughly five mile from the town of Porjus.

The pictures here show how easy a mistake it was to make:

If the town are unwilling to see it leave, I just wish they would look after what is left a little better.

Its up on a mountain in the middle of nowhere!

Sometimes we have to accept that not everything can be preserved.

I had a think about this after recieving an email and some excellent pictures taken recently by a chap who has been to see it. If it would be possible to do so, I would be all for having a complete survey done getting the various parts put back into place as much as possible and having a building placed over the wrecksite with a proper interpretive centre set up if she will never be allowed to leave.

You’re mistaken Peter. Nobody takes bits off that wreck, that’s why I wasn’t allowed to recover it.

Come on you Swedes! Sort your act out and get her out the swamp and into Porjus at least, before it all ends up on ebay or in the smelter. I’ll even volunteer to sort the UK side of things out for you.

Just an update. I came across some more pictures online that show a massive amount of metal gone from the wing section. This is crazy and sad all the same..

Peter, if nothing comes of my efforts other than NF920 gets protected then it will be an achievement of sorts. It’s better than nothing. I was watching this post for a while!

I’ve got other things on the go, but I learned not to shout too loudly as people tend to pay too close attention and make things difficult! There’s plenty more Lancs.

minimans, my brother used to restore Jaguars for a living but I tend to do it for a hobby, selling some of them to fund other projects. I keep debating whether to try and get a couple of California cars as the rust drives me crazy! My day job is working for the Ministry of Defence behind a desk.

Regards

Ric
