Lancaster PA474 and 'Guns of Navarone'

I just picked up the ‘Aeroplane’ special about the Lancaster and noticed it features an article by Jarrod Cotter about the history of PA474. Likes dozens of articles before it ,it repeats the myth that this aircraft featured in ‘The Guns of Navarone’ while based at Wroughton. Clearly it did not since the film came out in June 1961 and PA474 did not move to Wroughton till 1964. Also the finished film only features rather poor model Lancasters. I can only assume this myth has come about because of some confusion with ‘Force 10 From Navarone’ (1978) which does feature some footage of PA474. Or is it possible that PA474 was used in the earlier film but the footage ended up on the cutting room floor?

Unfortunately I have always found Aeroplane rather amateurish compared to FlyPast. Don’t send them any photos either – they managed to lose mine. It’s a mystery how as their office is not big.
