Ah…thats why it was famous. Titanic became famous from the film, too, of course. At least, thats what my kids think.

Hallo all, my name is Danny and I was one of the guys at the Brandauu dig. The recovery was done quite professional. We have German authorities on site, but alas the amount of human remains were discouraging. Only an hour pprior to closing out the recovery did another eyewitness come forth and told us a totally different story. He stated that the Lancaster blew up prior to crashing and that remains were scattered over a large area. This contradicts all other witness statements, but is most likely what happened as the recovery points to just such an event. Most importantly, the three families present were very satisfied and were actively involved in the recovery. There will be one more search and recovery conducted which will last for anout a week. Then in August we intend to open a memorial at the crash-site. By the way AFN (Armed Forces Network) did a one minute clip on this, if you are all interested, I could link the site for you all. Thanks, Danny

Can anyone say what the background is on the recovery? Are the German authorities involved? Is the MoD involved? Looks well organised – the very best of luck to them.

Have a look at the corresponding thread on RAF Commands Forum, that’ll give you the answer to what you have asked.

Those crew pictures, all so similar, are all so equally sad.

It’s amazing what these guys did for us.

Nicely put. Couldn’t agree more.

Lancaster JB221 OF-W

Took off at 00:30 from Bourne. Intended Target Frankfurt.

At least Nine other Aircraft were lost on that Raid. Most were Halifax 2’s

Three of the crew are buried at Durnbach War Cemetery One Officer and two Air Gunners. I hope that the other crew members remains will now be laid to rest.

A lot of Bomber Boy’s still lay in the remains of the Aircraft they left England in.
One day we may see a proper and fitting memorial to the 57,000 men of Bomber Command it is long overdue

The picture featuring in the news clip appears to be similar to one from my collection that I’ve posted on here in the past.

“Grabungen nach alliiertem Bomber
In der Nacht zum 26. November 1943 wurde ein alliierter Bomber über dem Odenwald abgeschossen. Drei der sieben Soldaten wurden damals tot geborgen, vier müssen noch im Wrack liegen. Erst jetzt – 65 Jahre nach Kriegsende – sollen die Angehörigen Gewissheit bekommen. Am Wochenende wurde in Brandau mit dem Ausgraben der Flugzeugreste begonnen. “

Dig for an allied bomber

In the night of 26th November 1943 an allied bomber was shot down over the Odenwald. Three of the seven crew were found dead at the time, but four had to remain in the wreck. Only now – 65 years after the end of the war- are their relatives to have certain knowledge of them. At the weekend the excavatiion of the remains of the aircraft was commenced

I hold the Bomber Command aircrew of WWII in the highesst possible esteem. They are my heroes.

However, I was not there at the time so my opinions or points of view probably lacks some validity.

That said and in my very humle opinion WSC let them do all the dirty work before hanging them and their leader out to dry.

As a consiquence of this opinion, I have little time for WSC………

They shall not grow old.

the day they (MP spongers) get a back bone n man up to the fact that it was them and their policies that should take the blame and not the ‘many’ brave lads at the pointy end of the stick who should suffer the stigma/bad press, then it will happen, but as we all know they are like jelly fish in that department. 🙁

per ardua ad astra!

steve_p Err, could you translate that please? I do not have a clue what you are on about.

The gentleman is saying “People need to realise it’s the politicians who are responsible for the decisions taken in wartime and they should be held accountable for the actions taken by the aircraft crews, however, the politicians seem to not have the courage of their convictions. I’m sad

Through Endeavour to the Stars”

Hope that helps steve_p
