Lancaster recovery in Normandy

The Telegraph reports that Lancaster ND739 is being dug. One of 3 Lancasters shot down in 5 minutes by experten Oberleutnant Helmut Eberspacher it appears.

I have just endeavored to read this thread from start to the current date and I must say I am shocked and and appalled at the notion of a potential war grave robbery such as this.
It is a pity no other real witnesses to the ‘recovery operation’ have felt able to give a definitive account of the dig.
It would be interesting to do another perhaps dare I say more official dig with the CWGC in attendance to ascertain whether any traces of the crew were missed, were scattered further in the field on impact, hence the lack of discovery of remains, or where indeed removed.

David: The activity that Moggy mentions involves people from at least three European countries, including the French authorities in Normandy. We have not forgotten this sad affair. Thanks for posting that video.

They are not forgotten. Far from it.

There is still activity, aimed at giving the crew the burial they deserve and aiding the French authorities in finding the truth.

Stick with this….there is reference to this controversial dig. I feel sad for the family, there is still an outstanding obvious question here that remains unanswered.

It is quite an old story which has already been covered here.

I am sure somebody will be able to find and post a link.

It is still an unresolved case. The crew are still missing.

In the end I left my book and listened to Mr Graves. After a short opening picture of a Halifax (!) he gives an account on the Lancasters’ missions that D-Day. Near the end he discusses the crew’s fate: “We didn’t find a thing”. He suggests the bodies were buried elsewhere, and he would like to know where.

Not had a chance to go through the whole thing or watch the video in full, yet – rushing to finish a book contract but finding myself easily distracted today! Too many interesting stories out there.

If Mr Graves is aware of unknown airmen’s graves that he thinks may be linked to the Lancaster crash site (is that what he is saying?) then hopefully he will furnish that information to the MOD along with his evidence in order that it can be looked at. That way, if the evidence is there, then the MOD will instruct the CWGC to change the headstones with named ones. Unless I have misunderstood, then Mr Graves may know the location of such burials but this doesn’t seem to be revealed. But I may have misunderstood and perhaps all will become clear when I watch the full piece a bit later on.

More questions than answers.

What is the location of these supposed graves of unknown airmen who may be linked to the Lancaster?

And unless I am missing something here, is it being suggested that the authorities know where these graves are but are not saying? That seems a bit unlikely to me.

Thanks for the information, Versuch. I wonder if there is a link to that programme that we could see.

Here in Australia, the 60 Minutes program had a segment on this dig, they interveiwed relatives and Mr Graves. No local authorities or RAF or UK government
spokespersons interviewed. The upshot of it appears to be that the “Authorities” know were the bodies are…..Yet no one thought to ask!

It is indeed unfortunate, Laurence, that there is no further news as to this Lancaster crew.

It would be nice to think that it may be possible to resolve the mystery in this New Year, ahead of the 70th anniversary of D-Day in 2014.
