"Lancaster" seat coming up in auction

Morning all,

I’m no expert on aircraft seats but this example coming up for auction with TW Gaze in Diss doesn’t look like a Lancaster seat to me. Auction on Saturday 30th; Lot 5004.

http://www.twgaze.co.uk/auction/lots/?id=591&lot=0&pp=999999#block

Even if it’s not Lancaster it may be of interest / use to someone on here.

Its very vague and depends what is written in the sale catalogue as a disclaimer. There is an onus for the description to be accurate but I should imagine the auction house would refer to the description given by the seller and seek to absolve themselves of responsibility from there.

It did not relate to their inability to identify artefacts or the gung-ho manner in which they seem happy to accept the seller’s description of goods.

If the item turns out to be not as described e.g. buyer of the seat subsequently finds out it is not from a Lancaster, can they take it back and get a full refund ? or does the small print say ‘sold as seen regardless of description’ ?

Peter. My comment was related to Gaze as a company to do business with, of which I have direct and painful (not to say expensive) experience.

It did not relate to their inability to identify artefacts or the gung-ho manner in which they seem happy to accept the seller’s description of goods.

They have in the past messed me about big time and I am happy to relay that to others. It is, after all, one purpose of a forum.

My gut instinct was Sabre but when I googled it I looked at what must have been a later type seat.

The seat sold for £320 GBP + commissions = around £390.00 GBP

Further to my earlier suggestion of it being similar to a Heinkel 162 seat, I was way off mark, or maybe not……………
From the http://www.ejectionsite.com/p84seat.htm site
“This seat is an example of a 1st Generation ejection seat. This seat used a gun catapult system and used manual lap belts, and manually operated seat pack parachutes.
This seat was the first US-production ejection seat used. It bears more than a slight resemblance to the Heinkel 162 seat that was captured in the late part of World War II and brought back to the United States for development. The headrest and backpad shapes are nearly identical although the armrests and foot rests are clearly different. The firing mechanism used a two stage system where one lever is raised to arm the seat and the second raised to fire it.

So is it rare = ££££ ?

An update on the seat front, I went over to the preview this evening and took a few – incredibly poor – photos by phone.

There is a ink stamped type number on the back, but I couldn’t make it out. ‘Armrest adjuster’ on either side so from English speaking origin of use.

Isn’t the Hendon 162 missing its seat? (or is it the stick?). It’s probably just me but I’d be happy to see either that or the Duxford one go to Berlin or elsewhere in Germany if they wanted it, two seems a lot in the UK for an as good as non-operational type, interesting though it is.

looks like an early soviet bang seat from the small pic – like a Mig15 would have. Not Gnat

Further to my German WWII suggestion, looking at early Soviet seats, there are similarity’s between the Heinkel & Soviet seats

My first thought was it looked like some sort of early US made seat, doesn’t look Gnatish but happy to be wrong. Looking at it again not sure even if it is an ejector seat now, difficult with such a limited picture

Its a Gnat ejection seat isn’t it?

I might have to offer my services to TW Gaze!

That looks more like an ejector seat (not Martin Baker) to me. I can’t think of any Lancaster, even for trials, that would have had one.
Looks like an interesting item even without a Lancaster link.

What do you expect for £100 – a genuine Lancaster seat?
