Possibly, but an Anson pilot was certainly court-martialled for doing it. I have the details somewhere.

Am I right in thinking that a Squadron Leader Middleton led a squadron of Lancasters under the Brittania Bridge and Menai Bridge in the Menai Straits? Part of the preparation for a low level raid on Augsburg? Or has my brain been left boiling for too long again?

You can read more about Queenie VI here

I read a great bridge story recently, sometime in the 1930’s the mad barnstormer and former WWI pilot, Sqn Ldr Malcolm “Mac” MacGregor, apparently flew his aircraft under the bridge at Hamilton, NZ, pulled straight up into a loop and went under again as he came down!! So basically he looped around the bridge!!
Then there were a couple of bridges at Hamilton, not sure which one but I would imagine it would have been Victoria Bridge, as it was probably for a public display and regattas, etc are held near this bridge. Either way, all the bridges are the same height. Here’s a couple of period photos of Victoria Bridge, Hamilton.
Alternately it may have been the old Railway Bridge, seen below too.

Hi there,
That is a Robert Taylor Print titled “UNDER THE BRIDGE, He did it for the £iberty £oan”
It depicts an actual event. On October 22 1943 Lancaster ED930 (A66-1) “Q” for Queenie VI, piloted by Flt. Lt. Peter Isaacson flew under the Sydney Harbour Bridge to raise funds for the War Loan. The newspapers reported “He did it for the £iberty £oan!”
