A oil terminal in Buncefield, some 15 miles from Luton, has exploded. There are reports reports of casualties, but no official confirmation. Lots of houses have been damaged/on fire. The explosian was heard up to 30 miles away.
Some people have said they heard an aircraft prior to the explosion. Might be terrorism, might be a plane bound for (from) Luton, might be something else altogether.

Bexleyheath, basically my house, is expected to see a large amount of smoke tonight, I didn’t hear exactly what the TV said but it said something along the lines of “lots of smoke” and “bexleyheath” – so I’m assuming we’re gonna get a lot of it becasue Bexleyheath is never randomly mentioned
If at all possible could you get me a photo of that? Would be an interesting addition to my Bexleyheath scrap book. 😉

aj- I meant fire-fighting aircraft. That’s obvious. Makes one wonder why they weren’t used to drop fire retardent liquid; like they do in America. Are the Air Force not capable of that?

Apparently the fire should be out by lunchtime, and some of the firefighters are willing to stake their sallary on it!!

Just hearing on the news… some of the tanks have been put out but the fumes are drifting and may cause people to get sick and theres suit falling out of the sky
I hope it’s their best suit!

At Little Chalfont (10 miles) clumps of foam was dropping from the sky, and other bits were sailing through the air, like toy balloons full of helium.
16.00 they announce that they are closing all the schools in the area on Tuesday, which is a nice day off for the teachers, but a royal pain in the butt for working parents. Obviously, the air we breathe in our homes is so much purer than the air at school.
Typical over-reaction, no bloody back-bone, where is the blitz-spirit? Bring back Churchill, etc.

?????
So you think it would be a good idea to firebomb an already burning fuel depot rather than trying to stop the fire from engulfing the remaining tanks???
He meant water bombers!
The turbulence above a fire this large is too strong for planes. A fire expert mentioned on Dutch TV that the best anyone could do is to let it burn out. Make sure nothing else catches fire, and beyond that do nothing.
Same guy also mentioned that this fire could only have been caused due to over pressure. I wonder if they ever found out how this over pressure was able to build up without being noticed. Assuming of course the expert did not miss something and the cause is different.

Agree, flag. The pollution from it is terrible.
Makes one wonder why the authorities don’t do what other countries do & use fire-bombing aircraft. Where are the Air Force?

There is a dreadful irony to this – Kyoto, with delegates from 157 countries having just agreed to draft a new, long-range plan to combat climate change.
My thoughts go out to the injured, and to anyone else affected.
I do not envy the fire crews! 🙁

According to a news report I heard earlier, it measured 2.2 on the Richter scale.
Now, our household never heard a thing (well, we were fast asleep), but someone who lives in Midhurst (about 10 or so miles south) e-mailed the BBC and said they heard it there! And someone also said they heard it in Worthing.
Anyway, one things for sure, we like many could see the massive effect of the smoke.
Here’s a few shots my dad took whilst out on an afternoon walk not far from us.
First two from Hurt hill, Haslemere looking at the blast site
And looking at the scene of the blast from the Gibbet at Hindhead
And finally, from the Gibbet, but looking towards Dorking
Cheers
Paul
That is eerie.

Has anyone come up with the sabotage theory yet????????
By: Canpark - 12th December 2005 at 08:04
We saw it in Kent though, well South East London bordering Kent
I saw it in the news like half an hour ago, it looks scarey like some Hollywood movie.

I bet the Lawyers were there within the hour looking for buisiness (compo “blood money) for distress caused approx 50miles away
