Large piston multi over London?

This evening @19.00, a large, possibly four engined, piston-engined aircraft passed overhead heading north east. Light in colour with four distinct black “exhaust” streaks on the wing undersides.

What was it? Connie? I only got a fleeting view as it passed between clouds.

I was wondering what had happened to the DC6’s out of Coventry – the base/finals turn is right over my house 😀

So when do the rest of the AACF get moving then?

All I see at the moment is fly.com buses..

With reference to the DC6 over London, this answers a little mystery for me.
While watching the Wimbledon Tennis coverage on Monday evening (look what married life’s done to me!!!) I was sure I could here the familiar sound of an overflying DC6 in the background. I assumed that I had imagined it.

Obviously not!!!

Hi Albert,

It all seems to have gone very quiet on that front. Its not definite it will fly again, but at the same time it’s not definite it won’t fly again either, if you see what I mean. I would imagine it all depends on how much it will cost to put it back in the air.

‘XC’ left at 2359Z in the end after having a slight tech problem with the cowl flaps.

Tom,

Thought I heard it go over just now!
As we’ve got your attention, what’s the latest on the Convair flying?

Don’t you find it a bitch when work interferes with your main interest ????

Tell me about it!!!!

I have been training our staff at various sites around the country.

One of which is on the shores of Lake Windermere. trying to concentrate on the lecture while Tornadoes are screaming past the windows at low level or Herks are thundering by………

Another site is near RAF Alconbury (as was). Again, teaching in a classroom whilst A-10’s were doing circuits is more than a chap can take !

On one visit, as we were leaving, a TR-1 (as the U-2’s were then called) was doing circuits. I parked the car in a layby waiting for his return on finals – but had to give and get on our way when he didn’t appear after 20 mins. As soon as we left the area, the bloody thing came back – but we were too far away by then !!

Ken

PS Our current office is under the flighpath of RAF Lyneham. They all laugh at me in the office when I rush to the windows at the sound of anything other than a Herk – and even sometimes to look at yet another Herk!

I’m even training up the young lady who sits opposite. She can now differentiate between a C1, C3, C4 & C5 !!!!

Hi Albert,

Beautiful photos! It was XC, she’s done 4 of these Zwiebrukens in the last 6 days as well as a Liverpool – Hahn night stop last night. G-APSA is off to Hahn at 2000z tonight from CVT so keep your ears open!

Firebird, I’m sure the crews would love it, but maybe not LHR ATC 😉

Cheers,

Tom.

Close Encounter Of The Six Kind?

Thanks Tom, always look skyward towards that distinct sound. Was it ‘SA or ‘XC? Here’s another of my air-to-air shots of ‘XC, showing just how close it came 😮

Welcome aboard Tom,
Can’t arrange a low pass down LHR’s runways the next time your passing, seeing all this modern stuff everyday at work is getting me down….. 😉 😀

Hello everyone,

Our DC6, G-SIXC would have been in the area at the time as she was flying a Cardiff – Zwiebruken cargo charter on Monday and left Cardiff at around 1845 after being delayed due to the cargo showing up late.

Hope this helps.

I was in a meeting at 3-ish this pm in Swindon.

I heard a heavy drone in the sky – and thinking it was maybe a Transall – or even an An-22 out of Lyneham, I was dying to go to the window to check.

But as we were in the middle of a discussion, I couldn’t – but I did catch a glimpse of a straight-winged piston a/c at medium altitude heading towards London – just before it entered cloud.

Must have been the same DC-6 ???

Yes, it was(well, one of two!) as I saw it also, heading SE over Swindon.

I would say that was definitely it!! Excellent photo and thanks very much for posting it. I heard the rumble of the engines while chasing the cat into the garden to give it its flea treatment…all thoughts of that forgotten as I searched the skies, but it was above the cloud base until already some way off!

Thanks again.

Guess my photo comes up to scratch then???? 😉

Does this clarify things? Seems your description was spot-on! 😎

Is that your pic Albert? Nice.

Thanks James, yes, shot it from Cessna 404 G-EXEX out of Coventry three years ago.

As far as I know one of the DC6s was in preparation for a flight when I last saw it (Friday), although I am not sure exactly when. The description sounds about right though 🙂
