Just because I’m feeling particularly wicked after a long day at Old Warden – and having a laugh with photographer Ian Frimston – we got talking as to what was the largest postwar aircraft to carry ‘Royal Navy’ titles?
(I think I know the answer – and yes, I do have some pics – and will post if no-one gets it!)

Graham has inadvertently started another discussion within his original light hearted post it would seem!.
Glad to have been of service!

I’m ready for a surprise here, but as far as I’m aware the Neptune was only used by RAF Coastal Command, not by the Royal Navy.
My bad…you’re right.
I’m afraid I’m used to the US where those missions are done by the Navy.
Oh well…:o

If this is a serious question…and I doubt if it is…by the way you phrased the question I think you’re looking for a zap or trials aircraft.
A good candidate for an operational aircraft would be one that has yet to be mentioned.
The venerable Lockheed Neptune.

RN Lancs
Thanks to Pagen01 and DaveF68 for your info, I am just about to start a new thread on this subject.

I don’t think any photos of the RN Lancasters have turned up (yet) but I have seen pics of RN Wellingtons and Whitleys.

Not assumption, assertion maybe! I was sent some info by a an ex Navy hand years ago, but there is a bit of info here,
http://www.lancaster-archive.com/lanc_postwar-royalnavy.htm
http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/Article_Lancasters.htm
I must admit that when Graham first posted I was hoping it would be photos of these Lancasters!
I think the Gosport Lancs that you refer to are different and with a different unit, possibly with RAF ASWDU who regularly operated with the Royal Navy?

780 Sqn FAA
Pagen01,
Yes, only to back your assumption, but I am curious to know was 780 Sqn FAA the number of the unit at Gosport?, Graham has inadvertently started another discussion within his original light hearted post it would seem!.

Come on pagey 😀 Lighten up, we cant always be right you know 😉
Very good Ben! I think people take me way too seriously anyway, but there is no way that I’m resorting to using smilies all the time, I don’t want to be that obvious!
Gerry I mentioned the Lancasters in post #4:p

Thread-drift…Was the Valiant ever evaluated by any force for ‘one-way’ use off carriers ? It’s ability to take-off from Brooklands was impressive

RN Lancasters
Graham,
Is it possibly the Lancaster?, three examples were on the strength of the Air Torpedo Development Unit (ATDU) at HMS Siskin Gosport in the early fifties, the examples being:- PP 786, PA 778, and PA 334 all with RN titles. There were also Lincolns operating from Gosport in the same period, but I believe they were an RAF unit, Torpedo Training Unit (TTU).

Title
what was the largest postwar aircraft to carry ‘Royal Navy’ titles?
Seems clear to me.
By: pagen01 - 3rd October 2011 at 14:14
Oh sorry, I thought it was a serious and in depth thesis on the V Bombers role within the Fleet Air Arm!
My point (serious as it may seem) is that this looks like a simple zapping, rather than use of a Vulcan by the Royal Navy – as per the title.
I agree that the thread was amusing, and absorbing.:)
By: WB556 - 3rd October 2011 at 14:02
Its only meant to be a bit of fun. He said the largest aircraft to carry navy titles not the largest to be active on a squadron.
By: pagen01 - 3rd October 2011 at 13:40
Hmm very tenous, it looks zapped in dayglo tape and with sqn sticker to me, unless there are records that show this aircraft on 809 sqn charge.
The maintenance serial is an RAF one, Royal Navy instructional serials start with A.
Interesting all the same.
