Actor Larry Hagman has died at the age of 81.He was best known for his roles as astronaut Major Tony Nelson, in the comedy I Dream of Genie and of course J.R. Ewing in Dallas.
Back in the 60s my dad, an Air Force pilot, liked to occasionally watch I Dream of Genie. In one episode the general kept ruining his uniforms (thanks to genie) and by the end of the episode he was down to a WWII flying suit. My father loved that.
And speaking of “Who Shot JR” episode of Dallas, a few years ago a writer went to an antique car forum and asked about how one would drive a vintage rooadster because a character would have one in a book she was writing.
After a few days, with no one better qualified answering) I did.
It turns out that the writer was the woman who wrote those Dallas episodes and is now retired in Beverly Hills and writes novels. I even got a “thank you” mention in the book.
Hagman was a bit eccentric, leading beach parades in Malibu, and having “no speaking Sundays”…and being an actor, we’d probably be disappointed if he wasn’t.
RIP…

I remember him as Col. Clarence E. Pitts in the film ‘The Eagle Has Landed’
RIP.
Yes,
I also recall another movie in which he was a Helicopter pilot, vietnam vet.
Jeannie was watched as a kid, but can’t say I rushed home for it.
As for Dallas, I confess I never missed a single episode. Even the very start of it, which was on BBC2 8pm Monday night slot (1)………..and it was Terry Wogan which yammered on about it on his Breakfast radio every week until viewing figures made it clear it was a winner and a Saturday nighter.
(1) I alays used to watch this 8pm because it was BBC’s “Give it a try” slot.
Alias Smith and Jones were on that, Kelly Montieth show and lots more.

I Dream of Jeannie was brilliant. I used to watch it as a boy and I loved the way Jeannie would simply appear at the least opportune moments.

It’s ashame that he has passed away. I actually used to watch Dallas when I was very little with my mum. JR was always my fave character. We also watched the newer Dallas too, which was good to see JR still part of. It won’t be the same without him though.
