Las Vegas Photography?

As you may know, next week i should be off to the US. In my 2 weeks there, were staying 3 nights @ LAS, at the Luxor. Now i know that McCarran is right over the road, but i was wondering how good is photography around the field?

I’ve just had glandular fever, so i have to take it easy in the heat, but is there some good spots around the perimiter especially near the Luxor hotel? I have a car so thats no problem!

Cheers!

Are they sensitive about photographing Signature’s apron (Very nice place btw) , or their Neighbour’s apron and its red and white 737s ? 😉

If you photograph Signature’s apron, you’re likely to get accosted by the law and asked to move on – biz jets are sensitive in Las Vegas as most big corporates don’t want their execs photographed on what might appear to be “free” junkets!

If you phogograph the nearby apron with the red and white 737s and Beech 1900s I’ve no idea what happens – no one who’s done that has ever been seen again! 😀

bmi-star: just a touristic info, you might want to try the buffet at the Rio… It’s quite nice.

If your travelling to Kingman from Vegas allow a little more time than normal as they are putting a new road in at the dam and it can from time to time cause extra hold ups.
I was workng out at Kingman last month and got caught in roadworks nearly missing my flight back.

If you’re going to stop at IGM (its off the freeway just as you come into the city from Flagstaff, well before the turn for Las Vegas – you should see the a/c off on your right as you come down the slope towards Kingman, but stay on the freeway until you see the airport sign) try and make it in the afternoon as the ramp is more or less north-south oriented and the landside is west, so photos will be far better after midday. Kingman to Las Vegas is about 100 miles, but allow a couple of hours to drive it as the bit over the dam is very slow – you might even want to stop at the dam as many tourists do.

The North/South runway is only good for a flight or 2 every hour on normal ops. Mainly they use the parallel East/West runways. Personally, I have never seen an approach from the South, but I have seen the rare takeoff from the North. Expect mostly narrawbodies at McCarran.

About the best airport in the USA. There’s a dedicated parking lot on Sunset Bvd along the south side of the airport (Sunset is less than a mile south of the Luxor) where you can even tune the car radio to ATC. There’s a fence there though, so photography needs care but the sun is favourable all day. At the end of the airport on Sunset there’s a strip mall where you can park and take approach shots. Or you can park on the top floor of the terminal parking garage and photograph from there, especially if they are using the north/south runways.

The good thing is that LVPD know about spotters and photographers and you won’t get any hassle from officialdom, expect maybe if you start pointing your camera at too many bizjets on the Signature ramp that is at the corner of Tropicana – photographing bizjets on their ramp is a bit of a no-no, but of course its no problem if they’re taking off or landing.

The bad news is that at this time of year the light in Las Vegas is appauling – the sun is way too high so you end up with airplanes with very bright tops and very dark lower surfaces. Go out early and/or late when the sun is lower to avoid this. Finally, Las Vegas is usually VERY hot at this time of year – not good for photographers both from a personal point of view and because of the heat haze. Again, go out early or late to avoid this.
