Lasham Collection Pictures, Drover, Sea Hawk etc

http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/8069099

Via a few PM’s I arranged to take some snaps at the Lasham Second World War Preservation society today.

I’m no expert with a camera or in preservation, so took pictures of almost everything including a couple of junk piles!

No ideas where the prop is from, tried to show the faded logo on one, maybe it comes from the engine thats on a frame?

I don’t want to state an opinion on the state of these, it would drag on an age!

Have tried on more than one occasion to offer a new home for the Sea Prince and to have it restored but they are not interested because they are doing it themselves !! Think any other offers of help would be met with a similar response. Great shame as they are some rare machines there which deserve some more TLC.

ahh well, we you cant win them all, just keep watching sites like these and hope one day they manage to do something with them, and support them,
like i have heard before, its not agaisnt the law to leave your aircraft in a field,;)
they cant be that bad, i mean look at the derelict lightning up north (is it yorkshire??) now thats abandoned, which is different to lasham, as they still
must care for there aircraft as they still want them, unlike the lightning which is in some dire straights, with some sort of legal wrangling going on about ownership,:(

Why wont the owner loan out the aircraft, he is obviously keep in aviation so thats would be the sensible thing. Some one should approach the owner the worst they will say is no, no harm done.

Me + merkle would love thos meteors

668

hi 668, as much as i would love a meteor , problem is we have no where to store it at the Mo, and i dont think they would give up the meatbox anyway,

At WZ they used T.7 and F.4 so the NF13 would be wrong anyway , nice all the same,
you exude enthusiasm, and i am really pleased with website etc,
its really good of you to jump on board, now PLEASE dont take this the wrong way, but when you put a post on ie, we would love those meteors
please dont use individual names, Use westonzoyland museum as a blanket,
as a interest for the future, and we would be interested (when) we could house and care for such a rare bird properly,as i dont want to get any more flak on the forum for things i have not personally said, but as a part of WZ Museum, feel free to put posts under that blanket asking around for a inventory of Possible aircraft worth saving,
I wish Lasham all the luck in the world, and if ever they or anyone else ends up in dire straights and we have the room sorted out in the future i am sure WZ museum would Gladly helpout and store there aircraft in a secure safe and loved enviroment,
“Here Here ” for private funded museums and the stirling work they do, if it wasnt for them, many of there aircraft on display whatever state of repair
would have been cut up and melted into baked bean cans decades ago,
Long may you all continue,
Kind regards

BSG- The aircraft are part of a long established collection. Bought with funds raised by volunteers . The fence surrounding the site is establishes the museum boundaries in the same way as the fences surrounding Duxford and Hendon. The museum hours are clearly displayed and certainly every time I have visited at weekends to talk to the volunteers I have found them approachable .
They have their ideas on how to preserve aircraft. Suffice to say that without their foresight the likes of the Sea Prince C.1 would be extinct . Similarily other aircraft were rescued from a similar fate. The best thing to do
is to visit when the museum is open and have a chat.

I know, I have done several times in the past, I was trying to set a tone of how the aircraft are, the site is well known and often visited out of hours for want of a better phrase and I don’t want to re-start the emotional postings, I see both sides and appreciate that if they were not there, the aircraft may well be frying pans by now. That said, there may be a chance to restore, save, relocate to somewhere more suitable than very damp ankle deep grass.

The impression I get from above, is that offers of help may have been declined, I’ve not seen or heard directly so can’t say – that seems to be the direction of some posts.

Would Hendon decline an offer to spruce up the Halifax? (don’t tell me they have……;) )its all a tad emotional so other than to say I offered to take some pictures for some members and I posted them, I’ll say no more !

I have noticed there seems to be a couple of posters on here, whose posts may contain all the right letters, but not necessary in the right order. (With apologies to Eric Morecombe).:D

I very much doubt that will happen, but one never knows. Like I said before if you were to approach the owner in a friendly manner and emphasize that you are keen on aviation history and would like to offer a hand in sprucing up the aircraft for display and that you would volunteer your time and also follow his directions etc then I bet you would be given a yes.

Keeping in mind that if he wants a plane left as is or wants a specific thing done which seems against what you think is right then you must go with what he says right? Sory I hope that makes sense?!

Well I still like the idea of approaching the owner ans asking if he/they would entertain a helping hand and commitment from a couple of chaps who want nothing more than to help with the upkeep of the aircraft and possibly bring in more visitors etc. If you don’t ask, you will never know right!

Phew – am glad I was watching TV last night !

Given that I’m happy to moan at places at Duxford (!) – I didn’t want to make any comment when I posted (eventually:eek: ) the images.

I went over there last night, about 4:45, the road along side Lasham is busy at that time with “rat run” commuters but the site was deserted and easy to access

I can’t decide, are they preserved, abandoned, or having a stay of execution?

I’d like to think that the owner is realistic and feels that if (for example) a working museum could take one in long term, perhaps even in exchange for something “disposable” if such a word can be applied….. even a replica Spit etc?

either way, it was a little sad to see and I hope that something can one day be worked out for them…..

Come on enough enough,

😀 come on lads. please stop sqaubbling, as far as i am concerned its over,
its gone too far, i know i certainly didnt help things, for which i have apologised,
lets keep on the subject of aviation
perhaps we could have a Virtual pub thread where we can go and chit chat about anything, and not take it seriously,

Please can we stop this fighting, its not doing any good, i apologise for taking things to heart last nite and could we please leave it like that, we should be supporting one another, and having a laugh, not a Virtual Punch up,
Perhaps a “Pub” thread would be a good idea, and any trouble the “Moderators” could act as “Bouncers” and any trouble they could eject the drunkards:D
I’m buying the first round !!:D
bring yer own tinnys and log on, ,good idea,
now lets LEAVE the Lasham thread for what it is intended for, Discussion about Lasham, Nothing else,

What comes to my mind reading all of the posts is the story (parable?) of the old bull and the young bull in a field……:)

I actually feel realy upset and shocked by this comment, now should i throw in the town at let wz fall along with merkle. I am very to this and i have lots of views being younger than most here i will be the future of this industry.

Now shame on you for making such a comment you should be supporting people like me and merkle, i dont see you saving any airfields/cockpits.

Now, I will just add my two pennuth, to try and make some sense out of what has gone before!

Lasham is a private collection, with most of the aircraft owned by a private individual. Whether we like it or not, it is entirely up to him what he does with them. There are plenty of other cases of this up and down the land. I am sure they would welcome volunteers to help, but I dont expect they would suddenly want hoards of people descending on them to work on their aircraft. They have thir own way of working – we don’t have to agree with it, but there isnt a huge amount we can do about it.

On a more serious note, its a fact that over time we will lose airframes to the scrappers torch. In many, many cases, we are only delaying the inevitable. Of course, that shouldnt stop us from trying, and it is refreshing to see younger people such as ‘merkle’ and ‘XH668’ with the passion that I and others had in our youth. Whilst some of their passion will inevitably be tempered as they become more knowledgeable and experienced, we should all be grateful for it!

This is slightly unfair, but there is a good point behind it. Lets try and stay on topic please?
