hope they save the sign…

well here in london they knocked down euston station in the 1960’s which was as much a landmark with its arch as is st pancras now…:(

wouldnt surprise if one day the baa try and knock down the queens building at LHR grrrrrrr

does anyone know if you can get a passenger ride in a dc-8 anywhere now?

Yep, I went to Long beach a few weeks ago for thanksgiving and many of the former Douglas building are destroyed. They are building a mall there!!!!

Fortunately the “Fly DC jets” famous sign is still standing!

That’s just sacrilegious that some people have such scant disregard for history

Just how many different types of DC-8 were produced? Anyone in the know?

erm check that site dc-8jet.com i think..

there was

dc8-10 all converted to 20’s i think
-20
-30 some converted to 50’s
all the above were transcon range except -30 which was long range and all were turbojet powered
-40 long range turbojet rolls royce conways

all below except -61 were long range and turbofan powered (-61 was transcon range)
-50 includes various combis pax and freighter mix versions
-61 super stretch
-62 little stretch long range
-63 super stretch with -62 extras
then many -60’s were converted to -70 versions by re-engine with cfm56 and updated cockpits etc

series 10-50/62 could seat upto 189 pax and the 61/63 upto 259 pax all in high density Y seating.

i think thats the lot

wow that dc-8 is immaculate!

wot a shame she will prob be scrapped grrrrr

wish i woz lottery winner

dc-8 is one of my fav rides
i worked with air spain who had 6 vintage ex eastern very old and classic dc8-21’s, they always went tech spectacularly usually for 24 hours leaving 189 pax fuming at us oops! we never had any parts and more hydraulic fluid was left on luton or gatwick’s ramp then in the a/c hehe

flew on a spantax -61 and we handled translift -71’s and a lovely crownair of canada -55
i also flew ceylon-karachi with PIA on a dc8-51 very old leased from cargolux
it was ex swissair -33 modified to a 50 series…that was in 1980 after i had a spell in the maldives.

air spain dc8 take off from luton, does a quick circuit then lands again…
why you back? oh we forgot the bags oh dear!:D

Pretty close Steve, I think it’s 41, eventually to be replaced by Airbus’s. Happy New Year!

Ah such a shame to a still useful classic been condemed!

Which brings me to ask how many DC-8s are there left flying in the world?

Of 556 built, there were 140 still flying as of 13/3/05.

Confirmed by another forum, she has flown her last.:( 🙁

“Yes, It will unfortunately be scrapped. I know one of it s FEs.

It s a shame when you see how nice it was still looking. However, it is not the first immaculate DC-8-72 to be scrapped. Aramco s DC-8-72 (N728A) was scrapped in Opa Locka 3 years ago.

But when the value of the spare parts is higher than the amount the aircraft can be selled for, then these birds all get the same end.”

Yes I can! Just discovered that it had another ‘last’ flight, this time to Phoenix Goodyear airport, a flight of 22 minutes, I really think this is the END!:( 🙁 🙁

I presume that we are talking only about the last flight of HB-IGH rather than the last flight of a DC-8?

That was the inference, but I cannot find any further info. at the moment!

I presume that we are talking only about the last flight of HB-IGH rather than the last flight of a DC-8? I only say this because I understood that ATC ltd at Lasham were expecting a further year’s work servicing a couple of DC-8s at Lasham.
