Last flight of the BWIA tristar from london

Just a quick bye to the BWIA tristar from london heathrow. This type has flown from Port of Spain (Trinidad) to london since 1982 but at 10:10 am tomorrow morning 24/6/02 BWIA will now be operating an airbus A340-300. We will miss this legendary aircraft and to all who have travelled on it including me it will be truly missed as this was a legendary aircraft.

Yes, Kabir, the 777’s are replacing the A340-300’s. However, the A340-500’s (not 600’s Mongu) were ordered specifically to fly nonstop from SIN to the west coast of the U.S./Canada. I don’t think the 777-200ER’s will be able to do that! At present, they either stop in Tokyo, Taipei, HongKong, or Seoul on their west coast routes with the 744 or the A340 to San Francisco.

I too had heard that the A340-500 was on order (or was it the -600?) from SIA. The -500 is one of the most handsome aircraft ever, IMHO.

I dont think SIA will take anymore A340s…they are replacing them with B777.

They are still scheduled to take delivery of the A340-500’s, however. Those will be used to fly SIA-LAX nonstop. Unless this has changed? Also, the A380’s presence will definitely alter the ‘all-boeing’ configuration.

SIA took the A340s when there last CEO was there. The present one doesent favor the A340 and is sticking to all Boeing fleet. The new Air Switzerland will be taking 2 A340s of SIA in July with 3 in option. SIA A340s have same seat configuration of that of Air France.

If they’re going to replace a Tristar on any route, an A340 is a tremendous choice at that, especially in the wonderful BWIA scheme(one of my favorites). It is by far my favorite aircraft that I have never flown on. Singapore withdrew their A340’s from the SIN-ATH run a year too early. It’s now operated by a 777-200. And oh, how much I wanted to fly SIA on an A340! They only have 7 left and those are on their way out too. What a shame.

Ohh… that’s a shame. The L-1011 Tristar is one of those amongst my long list of favoutie aircraft!

I think the A340 is a good replacement for the tri-jets, but I’d be even happier if it was a 767 🙂 Oh, how I love the 767-300 (I’ve said that twice today)!

Well yes it is a shame. Thanks for the info Jason. However, I’d prefer to see the A340 on the run.

Ben
