Many years ago I read an account from a pilot flying escort to Hurribombers during which they, the Hurris, were shot down in droves. I seem to recall that this was late enough in the war and the escort pilot was disgusted that men were still sent out in what were then, very vulnerable aircraft.
Any idea when Hurricanes were last used operationally over mainland Europe?

Thanks for the info folks !
Imagine taking heavily laden Hurri’s in against a well defended European target in ’43 or ’44..that took a special kind of courage.
Still cant think where i read the account, I know it wasnt the account in “Big Show”, still cant remember who the author was or what book/mag it was in.
Must be old age catching up on me !

184 Sqn were the last offensive op Hurricane Sqn, operating MkIV’s and converted to Typhoons in March 1944.

1943? I seem to recall reading something similar in Pierre Clostermann’s “The Big Show”, and it was well before D-Day anyway.
