Last intact WWII hangar at Wellesbourne demolished

The friendly airfield at Wellesbourne was once RAF Wellesbourne Mountford; a Wellington OTU base. Nowadays it is a very welcoming GA field and is also home to a taxiable Vulcan and the site of a superb little museum centred on the old WWII underground control bunker.

Most of its WWII hangars were sited on the opposite side of the runway to today’s active area. Where most of the RAF hangars stood is now an industrial site where modern or re-clad structures sit in place of the old hangars. One J type hangar though stubbornly had remained intact – that was until now.

A friend of mine has advised me that last Friday the J type was in the process of being bulldozed. If so then one of the most substantial reminders of the airfield’s original purpose has now gone.

Here’s a picture I took over that area a couple of years ago, when inbound in an Auster. The J type can be seen in the centre of the left hand row of buildings.
