Last of Many PZ865, G-AMAU, King's Cup air race 1950

Ok, Flown by Peter Townsend, entered by his very good friend  Lizzy’s sister(you know the Queen :p ) and came second with heavy handy cap.

What I would like to know is doe’s a colour photo exist anywhere of the Hurra in it’s splendid livery of royal blue and gold   .

Yes she look’s fantastic now with the BBMF, but I would love to see her in those colour’s if it is at all possible 🙁 .

The Picture’s I have seen are all black and white, and don’t do much for me.

Has anyone out there seen any colour shot’s, or old enough 😉 to have seen her in person back then  .

Cheer’s all 😀 , Tally :dev2: Ho! :dev2: Ho! Phil :diablo: . ( I guess with the attachment problem’s, if the there is one out there, please can you email it to me please, If I could be so lucky  )

First flown Langley by Gp Capt P.W.S.Bulman, August 1944. Retained by Hawker Aircraft, stripped of armament, first public appearance as G-AMAU at the R.Ae.S. Garden Party, White Waltham, 14 May 1950. C.of A. issued 23 May 1950. Second place in Kings Cup Air Race (283 mph) 17 June 1950, flown by Gp Capt Peter Townsend, entered in 1951 National Air Races – which were cancelled – and attended a variety of events including a Vintage Aircraft Rally in 1952, another R.AE.S. Garden Party in 1953, the National Air Races in 1954 (pilot Don Lucey) and the RAE Jubilee 1955 (Bill Bedford).

Film appearances included “Hawks in the Sun”, “Angels One Five” and – of course “The Battle of Britain”.

Chase plane duties at Dunsfold included the German Sea Fury TT programme (1960) and early transition trials of the P.1127 in 1961.

If you say it should be slightly ‘darker’ than the profile, why are you happy with the Corgi model which is LIGHTER than the profiles???

I said it should be slightly darker because that is a fact based on me having original samples from areas not exposed to light etc. However, as MOTF rightly says, I am not as fussy as most on this board! The model is pretty and makes a lovely comparison with a military marked example….which is also a fact.

Did quiet a bit the old girl I believe, before ending up at the BBMF 🙂 .

As I bored you all with before, I have original woodwork from 865 with traces of the blue on it. Maybe it is just me, but it is a tad darker than the profile pix Albert has posted. The woodwork was at CockpitFest last year and I will take some (tho’ off the cockpit) this year if anyone wishes to see it.

I have a Corgi model and am well happy…..I have ordered the AB910 model an am sure I will be happy with that too!!!

Just out of curiousity, how many races did the plane participate in? I see we got three different race# here. Did it win any races?

T J

Interesting question, not quite sure? All I know is that it participated in the 1950 and ’51 races, but not sure about the third. Don’t think it won any, or we would know that fact.

Hmm yes as mentionned on the previous thread the blue of the Tomtit does look darker too, although by the time you throw in the variations between monitors, ageing colour prints and variations during painting, the correct colour may well remain one of lifes great unknowns…. definately Blue thats about all you can say.. so presumably from Alberts ‘wink’ whoever drew the profiles (was it Dan?) had a colour picture??:D Neil.

Hurricane G-AMAU

There has been a lot of debate about the authenticity of the colour of the Corgi model of this and I am most surprised that no one has yet to post a COLOUR photograph of it, considering it lasted in this scheme until 1960.
Anyway, here are some very accurate profiles showing the CORRECT colour blue and all the marking variations that G-AMAU wore! This is as good as you are going to get. 😉
