Last Weekend's Travels! The Azores 26-30/7/07 BIG POST!

Hi All,

I returned home on Sunday from a nice weekend of flying around! We played a concert on Saturday night on the beautiful volcanic island of Pico in The Azores, involving six flights and flying through Lisbon. Our flights were:

1. 26th July – bmi Airbus A319 G-DBCE Manchester – London Heathrow
2. 26th July – TAP Air Portugal Airbus A310 CS-TEX London Heathrow – Lisbon
3. 26th July – TAP Air Portugal Airbus A319 CS-TTJ Lisbon – Horta
4. 29th July – TAP Air Portugal Airbus A320 CS-TNA Horta – Lisbon
5. 29th July – TAP Air Portugal Airbus A320 CS-TMN Lisbon – London Heathrow
6. 30th July – bmi ERJ 145 G-RJXG London Heathrow – Manchester

The shots here vary in quality, as some were taken on my 30D and others snapped very quickly on Babycam (A540). Anyway… Here goes!

Our A310 waits at the gate to take us to LIS:

Our transport to Horta. Not the best pic but it was the best I could get quickly!

Some randoms on approach to and arrival at HOR. The spectacular 7,716 foot high Pico Alto made for a nice view!

Our transport to The Azores, shot from baggage reclaim through the window:

A few general shots from the islands. Again, I have a room with a view!

Luckily I had plenty of time to wander around with my camera, so I tried to take full advantage of this!

I probably drank bmi out of more alcohol than the promotor paid for my air fare!

Sure sounds like the Paul i know πŸ™‚

However, you would get lounge access which may or may not be a good thing if you are wanting to take some pictures. The BA domestic lounge at LHR Terminal One is a great one for views over 28R. The bmi lounge, on the other hand, looks over nothing but the cul-de-sac where all the bmi gates are.

I’m usually in lounges anyway when travelling for work, although I rarely take aviation shots unless it’s a personal flight. The view from the bmi lounge at LHR certainly isn’t all that good but as you say, I very much doubt many people who use it regularly actually care! The last time I was there we were delayed by 2 hours flying up to LBA because the crew forgot to disarm the emergency slide on arrival after our aircraft’s previous sector. We’d just arrived after flying OPO-LIS-LHR and had something like 3 1/2 hours before we were due to depart, so that combined with the 2 hour delay meant I probably drank bmi out of more alcohol than the promotor paid for my air fare! πŸ™‚

egpx… I am occasionally in front of the curtain, but in all honesty I’ve travelled far too much by various means to really be all that bothered about that! Business on most of the European routes I fly regularly actually means nothing more really than better food and free newspapers anyway!

Paul

That’s true Paul – the seats aren’t much better, if at all. You can’t even say that you will be separated from the riff-raff as riff-raff has a tendancy to be well off and book business nowadays :p However, you would get lounge access which may or may not be a good thing if you are wanting to take some pictures. The BA domestic lounge at LHR Terminal One is a great one for views over 28R. The bmi lounge, on the other hand, looks over nothing but the cul-de-sac where all the bmi gates are.

I guess your average business lounge user does not place airport views at the top of his list of priorities πŸ˜€

Adam (Dougal)… I’m not actually certain you could fit three aircraft the size of A320’s/A310’s on the apron. They would physically fit, but in terms of operating them I’m not sure there’d be enough space to taxi around the parked aircraft. Three ATP-type aircraft I’m sure would be OK but I really don’t know about anything bigger. Our A320 parked on the middle stand (I say stand, it was just a mark on the tarmac) and there didn’t look to be too mch room around us as we taxi’d out!

Steve… Hope you enjoyed the wine!

Thanks again, all!

Not a bad weekend’s work πŸ˜‰ You should get the agent to book you business class next time πŸ˜€

Ted!

This thread is another perfect example of the high standard of pictures we have come to expect from you. Fantastic, fantastic & fantastic!!!!

With regard to one of your pictures (Overview of airport) it is quite amazing how as you say, 2 A320’s & an A310 can fit on that apron πŸ™‚

Keep up the hard work. I look forward to your next adventure somewhere around the world :p

James… Draw a line between Lisbon and Newfoundland in Canada and The Azores are kind of in the middle somewhere, on the mid-Atlantic ridge!

Thanks again for your kind comments, people. Much appreciated!

Hmmm…… I’ve given this thread a lot of thought today and I’ve concluded that, on balance, it really belongs in the Trip Reports subforum.

T’is fair enough, Lance. In truth I was in two minds as to which forum to post it in!

Thanks for your comments so far, all!

A great assortment mate. Really like the one of CS-TNA against the Sea…reminds me of Funchal style shots.

Nice selection of shots. So clear and blue in some of the shots. The TAP with the blue sea behind has nice colour.

Great colours in the one of the yacht & lighthouse. Have a try at making it letterbox format and it’ll have even more impact.

When I saw one of the shots I wondered why it was so out of focus. Then, when I looked more closely I saw that there was a tern there as the point of focus. Just sitting there keeping an eye on its town.

Nice wee trip for you. It looks so peaceful over there !
