Latest 747 e-brochure: Vote of confidence or act of desperation?

I found this in the a.net forum. It’s a link to Boeing’s latest charm offensive on the 747:

Some interesting stuff there, especially the suggestion that an Advanced 747 is on the cards. And a lot of very agressive marketing and spin there. Boeing and Airbus would both be a match to Alistair Campbell when it comes to spinning facts and trying to come on top of each other, that’s for sure.

My personal opinion is that this appear to be more an act of desperation than the projected way forward for the 747 programme. Some of the statements made there are certainly eyebrow rising… “The 747 remains the fastest, lightest and most flexible jumbo. Period.” Er, yes and the only one too. But once the A380 comes into service it will be a different story.

Interesting to see the “lower trip costs” claim as well. Since Airbus is claiming the same thing (or something very similar) one of the two companies it’s not telling it straight.

So is this Boeing’s almost-official confirmation that the Advanced 747 is going ahead? Or a ploy to dent sales of the A380 and try to revive sales of the 744?

What alternative does Boeing have? What with Airbus running away with all the goodies these days (Deservedly in my view). I wonder how much more can be wrung out of the dear ‘ol 747. But bending, stretching and tweaking old designs seems to have been the Boeing way for some years now, I guess with the exception of the 777. This flawed plan seems to have brought Boeing Commercial to where it now finds itself. Maybe the 7E7 will be the company’s salvation, but it seems an awful lot of eggs in one basket to me.
