Latest FLYPAST Mag, two photograph related questions- Goggles and Spit canopy 'mod'

Just been enjoying the latest edition, lots of ww11 content!

The superb, clear photo on page 21 of Flt. Lt Gordon Conway in the cockpit of his MKV111 Spitfire

1. He is wearing a pair of black frame MK11 Goggles, one of the lenses appears cracked? or is this some kind of reflection?…..I would imagine this would be ‘acceptable’ as long as the damage wasn’t directly interfering with his vision? closed cockpit so the goggles would probably not been worn all the time. I realised this is a posed shot.
I have a genuine pair of these, NOT the common Motor/Transport types, which also have a crack in a lens in similar position, have always wondered whether they could have been worn in ‘combat’.
Image seems to be credited to a relative, Daughter?

2. Is it my imagination, or has there been some kind of Modification to the cockpit lock? behind his head? not sure of the correct name for this! there seems to have been an extra, metal? handle / puller added?

The butterfly’s are fiddly with gloves, gauntlets etc. The addition of a wire etc was common

wrt 2 it looks as if a leather strap has been added between the two wings of the release handle to facilitate its use. Obviously a local modification or fitted at the pilots behest
