Ah how I miss LAX. I really must get back to California some day soon !
Great shots, isn’t there a burger bar at the end of one of the runways that offers great spotting opportunities… the ‘In and Out Burger’ ???
Yeah, good for spotting, not so good for photography sadly.

Global Express,
no did not manage to find that spot – Woodley / Waterman is on the eastern side of the airfield rather than the western Having said that a drive round (clockwise direction) will allow the side roads to be explored and you may find somewhere more suitable. multimap will give a good indication of the roads that offer some views but Woodley is the main road on the east side.
Ref frew – yes there is the in ‘n’ out burger place which I spent some time at late afternoon – it is ok but you will need a wide lens to get anything large in.

Global Express – yes we visited several other airfields Santa Monica, Van Nuys, Whiteman, Hawthorn (inactive as runway being repaired) Compton, Torrance and Burbank. The only ones with biz were Santa Monica / VN / Burbank & 1 HS125 at Compton (N4CR)
Van Nuys was best for biz but wx was foggy to start with so could hear but not see them – there is a ‘viewing area’ but it took us ages to find. Address is Waterman / Woodley with Woodley being the major road & Waterman is by a small fire station – we drove past it twice. Viewing area does offer ok views but the fence is high with wire on top which does intrude into pics – i only have a few biz pics without it so may post them here somewhen – if they would be of interest. Easier to do a circuit clockwise and turnings will be on rhs making things slightly easier – if you can, it is worth paying a bit extra to get a gps system for the car – worth its weight in gold.
Thanks Paul!
I’ve seen several shots on airliners.net that look as though they’ve been taken from the western side of the airfield:

Did you managed to get over there or is this the same spot as the viewing gallery?
Thanks for your help,
Alex
edit — this is the location I’m trying to find (16R landing shots):

Great photos, interestingly enough and to cut a long story short, I got a call at home Friday last to go out to LAX Saturday for work. In answer to what’s happening to the restaurant, I saw an article on local Fox news this morning that’s it’s re-opening today, although they still finishing off work. Apparantly a large piece of concrete fell off earlier this year so it’s been closed for structural inspection and repair.

Some excellent shots there!
Nice to see some stuff from somewhere different.
I have to agree that the United 747 take-off shot is stunning, but I also love the Song 757…as its been over a year since it was merged back into mainstream Delta, but it is still good to see the livery around, just a matter of time before the livery is changed over though…:( !

Super shots Paul! That United 744 takeoff shot is awesome!!!
Did you manage to visit Van Nuys or Burbank? I hope to book a trip out to CA next year for the biz jets.

A lovely diversity of shots ..i think Southwest is the most gawdy livery ever displayed on an airframe

Mark,
glad you like the shots – as for Imperial being accessible by foot – tricky but I certainly saw buses along that road (number 103 ring a bell but do not quote me) and you could always get a taxi. (Imperial Hill East – opposite no 500 which is a mortuary)!
Cheers Paul, the buses are actualy pretty good around LAX (for the US at least) so I’ll try and experiment next time I’m round there!
Peter, the area below the Theme Building is currently closed because bits kept falling off it. They are doing some structural work to make it safe I think.

What’s happening to the restaurant behind the Fiji?

Great shots!
Imperial Hill, is that accessible on foot by any chance?
If not I’ll have to make do with “good ol” in n’ out on my next few trips to LAX.
Roll on March when I can hire a car over there! 😎

Thanks for the comments – it might look hot but wx was varied – usually foggy in the mornings but generally got clearer during the day. Also visited a few other airfields so may post more stuff when i have time

Some lovely shots paul from an airport not featured very often on this forum, it looks damm hot! The Delta Connection ERJ just looks very classy.
Well done and keep posting
