LBA 11/10 First DSLR Attempts

Decided to treat myself last week and buy a nice new DSLR. I have never used one before so been trying to teach myself to shoot with one and also to learn the art of editing. Here are my first attempts all taken with a NIkon D3000 and NIkon VR 18 – 55mm Lens. Any help or constuctive critism welcome.

You always want to leave some space in front of the Aircraft for it to fly into, it helps the composition and makes it appear more natural and pleasing to the eye if that makes sense.

Where as this one has the space in front, (but maybe just a little bit much) but it gives it a more natural pose that is more pleasing to the eye, and gives you the impression it has somewhere to move too.

You have a very fair point but a word of warning… Such compositions will result in a rejection from sites like JP and how you compose your images really depends on what kind of photography you want to do. If you’re shooting purely for your own enjoyment then you can compose the image however you like and space in front of the aircraft can indeed look pleasing, but if you’re wanting to upload to aviation photography sites like JP then the composition will generally need to be a little more balanced, i.e. the aircraft needs to be sitting centrally in the frame because the aircraft is the sole subject of the image; you’re shooting a specific ‘subject’ as opposed to a ‘scene’.

It isn’t a case of right or wrong here, just purely a case of which approach you want to take because they are quite different disciplines that don’t necessarily go hand in hand. 🙂

Hi Allan,

Firstly if these images are your first with a DSLR then I’m impressed!

Paul

Me too 🙂

This one of yours hasn’t got it so you get the feeling it has nowhere to go and is sort of framed not giving it a sense of movement if that makes sense

Does that make sense?.

Your duck the white highlights are burnt out, you need to shoot it at a faster speed or different aperture to darken it down and reduce the highlights, or if you can process it in some software to reduce it, it gives it a harsh look.

Not that I am any better than you myself, these were just tips that were told to me and seem to work, welcome to DSLR’s you wil have fune with it 🙂

Cheers for the comments guys like I said I am new to the DSLR world but have taken a few pictures previously with my point and shoot.

Paul, I will look at the two that I have posted and maybe repost them to here to see if I have cropped them correctly this time. This is the first time also that I have edited shots using my new software. I have purchased a copy of photoshop elements and find it quite simple to use although I am only using the quick edit features at the moment.

LBA is my local to be honest I live about 12 miles south east of the airport and generally go up just to practice when I get time. I am sure our paths will cross at some point. I normally go to the bench or round to near the grave yard. But I have heard there are some good photo opportunities somewhere near the runway 32 end??

Once again cheers for the help.

Regards

Hi Allan,

Firstly if these images are your first with a DSLR then I’m impressed! A few are a little on the soft side and the exposure is slightly off in parts but they’re really fairly small problems to fix, especially when you’re shooting in good light like you were doing (rare for LBA!) Poor light takes a little more work but you’ll soon be getting damned good results in good conditions if these are your first.

On the JP rejections, after a quick look at the two you linked to and I think they’re both acceptable in terms of quality (assuming no dust spots), but both are sitting slightly too low in the frame giving them an unbalanced appearance. Try re-cropping both with the fuselage sitting a little higher in the frame and they shoud be OK. One thing I can recommend though is spending a little time looking through the images on JP that were accepted over the last 2 or so years. Take note of how sharp they are, how they’re composed, i.e. where the aircraft sits in the frame, what the exposure/contrast/brightness are like, etc. Once you get used to seeing the kind of images that have been accepted then you’ll be able to spot slight flaws in your own images and then fix them.

Do you get up to LBA often? I’m an LBA local myself and will be very happy to give a few pointers if we bump into each other up there. 🙂

Jetphotos Rejections

Guys,

Didn’t really think it would come to anything but in my nature I always like to try so I thought I would post a couple of my images on jetphotos and see what they had to say. Now a few of them were classed as “soft / Undersharppened” which is fine and probably half the issues are my photoshop skills arent great and also i had to crop into the image alot.

I then posted a couple that I thought were ok and the reason they declined these were ” bad framing / aircraft not centered” so just wondered if you guys on here might have some tips on how else I could centre them as I am a bit confused.

Good shots, Allan, and welcome to the forum. You’re right too, you’ll see a huge difference with a bigger lens which I’m sure you’ll get in due course. The less of the picture you have to take away with the crop, the more quality you’ll retain.
All the best

James,

These shots have been cropped and edited a little so hence why they seem much closer than you would expect and why I think I have lost a little bit of quality on some of them.

Cheers for the comments anyway.

Excellent first bunch of shots – surprised you managed to get in so close with the lens only being 55mm…the Jet2 757’s and TCX A320 are the pick of the bunch for me.
